Netherlands Relocation Checklist
Before and after arrival steps
Follow a step-by-step checklist for your Dutch relocation, including document legalisation, municipal registration, BSN acquisition, and digital access setup.
Set up, activate or recover the login you need for Dutch online services
DigiD is the personal login for Dutch government websites, from your municipality and the tax authorities to health insurers and pension funds. You need a citizen service number (BSN) to get one, and the activation code arrives by post. If the steps go wrong, a free information point in a library or a municipal desk can walk you through them. People who live abroad but have a BSN use a separate route.
How it works
Set up, activate or recover the digital ID you use to log in to government services.
Most government services online require a digital ID, such as DigiD in the Netherlands, itsme in Belgium, Cl@ve in Spain, the trusted profile in Poland, the online ID card function in Germany or electronic ID in Iceland. Setting one up often needs a one-time identity check in person, and offices, libraries and help desks can help you activate it, reset a PIN or recover access. Bring your passport or ID card and your phone. Never share your passwords or login codes, even with someone offering to help.

Many help points are in public libraries
Staff and volunteers can help you apply for DigiD, activate the app or find your way around government websites. Opening days vary a lot, and some places ask you to call or reserve a time.
