For the digital login built into German ID cards, eID cards and residence permits
German ID cards, the eID card for EU and EEA citizens and the electronic residence permit all carry an online ID function, the Online-Ausweisfunktion. With its six-digit PIN you can prove who you are to authorities online, for example to log in to government services. If the function is switched off or you forgot the PIN, the office that issued your card can switch it on or set a new PIN, usually on the spot.

Most government services online require a digital ID, such as DigiD in the Netherlands, itsme in Belgium, Cl@ve in Spain, the trusted profile in Poland, the online ID card function in Germany or electronic ID in Iceland. Setting one up often needs a one-time identity check in person, and offices, libraries and help desks can help you activate it, reset a PIN or recover access. Bring your passport or ID card and your phone. Never share your passwords or login codes, even with someone offering to help.
