Passports in the Netherlands
For Dutch citizens renewing a passport and for residents without a passport from their own country: who can apply and what to prepare.
Your ID document for daily life and for travel within much of Europe
The identiteitskaart is issued to Dutch citizens by the municipality where they are registered. You apply in person with a colour photo that meets the official rules and your old card, and every child needs a card of their own with the parents’ consent. Some municipalities ask you to come back to collect it, others deliver it. The card works for travel in much of Europe, but for most trips outside Europe you need a passport.
How it works
Find where citizens apply for or renew their national identity card.
National ID cards are issued only to citizens of the country. You usually apply in person, because the office takes or checks your photo and sometimes your fingerprints. Bring your old card or passport and a photo that meets the rules, and check the rules for children, who often need a parent with them. You collect the new card after a few weeks, sometimes at a separate appointment. If you are a foreign resident, you need a residence card instead.

Booking and collection work differently in each city
Some offices want one booking for the application and another for collection, others hand over the card without an appointment or deliver it to your door. Open the office in your city, for instance in Amsterdam or Groningen, to see what it offers and what to bring. Confirm opening times and appointment rules before you travel.
