Dutch Health Insurance Deductible: Understanding Eigen Risico

The annual amount an insured adult pays for many covered healthcare costs before the insurer pays.

“Eigen risico” can refer to compulsory participation, the organisation administering cover, the contribution paid, or the evidence used when claiming care or another insured benefit. Confirm the start date, insured person, covered event, exclusions, copayments or deductible, and how the insurer records a change in work, income, address, or family status.

Eigen risico is not the monthly premium and does not apply identically to every kind of care. Some services are outside it, while voluntary deductible choices can increase the amount.

Treat the term as the beginning of a checklist: confirm whether you are registered and covered, where routine care starts, referral rules, prescription access, patient charges, and what to do outside normal hours. If your circumstances change, update the responsible organisation instead of assuming records will synchronise automatically.
