Where to activate or reset your online ID in Germany

Citizens’ offices that set PINs, city by city

Most citizens’ offices, the Bürgeramt or Bürgerbüro, can activate the online function of your ID card or set a new PIN, but they differ on walk-in access and on which cards they handle. Your city’s offices show whether you need an appointment and whether they also take EU eID cards and electronic residence permits.

  • Munich

    Bürgerbüro Forstenrieder Allee

    Forstenrieder Allee 61a, 81476 Munich

Even if you do not live in Munich, you can book a visit to set a new PIN or switch on your online ID.

Bring the valid original identity card or eID card whose electronic function needs changing. Choose a private six-digit PIN and do not share it. For an electronic residence permit (eAT), contact Munich’s immigration service instead of booking this Bürgerbüro procedure. Before choosing a postal PIN-reset service, check current availability and conditions on the federal service’s website, including any effect on your existing PIN and online-ID function. A postal letter is not needed for a counter reset.

  • Munich

    Bürgerbüro Leonrodstraße

    Leonrodstraße 21, 80634 Munich

  • Munich

  • Munich

Servicestelle für Zuwanderung und Einbürgerung — Ruppertstraße

    Ruppertstraße 19, Eingang A, 80337 Munich

Book the dedicated residence-card appointment, as a PIN slot at a citizens’ service office will not cover it.

Bring your valid passport or accepted substitute and the valid original eAT. If you also have an expired card, surrender it at the appointment. Choose a private PIN. Check eligibility before booking; activating the electronic ID does not give you a new right to stay or make an expired card valid again.
