Where to activate or reset your online ID in Germany

Citizens’ offices that set PINs, city by city

Most citizens’ offices, the Bürgeramt or Bürgerbüro, can activate the online function of your ID card or set a new PIN, but they differ on walk-in access and on which cards they handle. Your city’s offices show whether you need an appointment and whether they also take EU eID cards and electronic residence permits.

Email the immigration office to arrange the PIN appointment, and say you need a new PIN, not a card collection.

Have the card and passport details available and ask which originals to bring. Confirm any fee and whether your particular card can use the function; a complete PIN checklist is not available.

Bring the relevant card for PIN help and confirm any additional identity evidence. For an eID-card application bring a recognised valid foreign passport or national identity card; no photograph is printed on this card. Keep the PIN letter safely: it is issued at application, while the blocking password is supplied at collection. Check the current payment instructions and collection requirements before attending.
