Social assistance in Spain
Who to ask when money runs short, what a social worker can do and which centre covers your neighbourhood.
The DNI is for Spanish citizens, not for foreign residents
The documento nacional de identidad, or DNI, is issued by the Policía Nacional at dedicated DNI and passport offices. The holder has to attend in person at a booked time, so nobody else can apply for you. A lost, stolen or damaged card needs a replacement rather than a renewal. Foreign residents get a different card, the TIE, which has its own service.
How it works
Find where citizens apply for or renew their national identity card.
National ID cards are issued only to citizens of the country. You usually apply in person, because the office takes or checks your photo and sometimes your fingerprints. Bring your old card or passport and a photo that meets the rules, and check the rules for children, who often need a parent with them. You collect the new card after a few weeks, sometimes at a separate appointment. If you are a foreign resident, you need a residence card instead.

DNI offices work on appointment and the card holder has to come in person. Anyone claiming a fee exemption should bring proof of it, and the way appointments are offered depends on the office.
