Key checks: stay in Spain after graduation, post study work Spain

Plan the switch from study to work in Spain

Covers stay in Spain after graduation in Spain, with practical detail on the route, evidence, timing and remedies.

Plan the transition before the final assessment. Ask the institution when it can issue an official completion certificate, map the study-authorisation expiry and compare the actual offer or project with each route. Do not stop at a popular graduate-visa label: the 24-month search title does not authorise work. File through the correct authority, retain the accepted receipt and start beyond student conditions only when the chosen route legally permits it.

Key points

  • Graduation does not automatically grant unrestricted work.
  • Direct modification needs completion and route evidence.
  • Job-search residence lasts 24 months and permits no work.
  • The job-search filing window is 60 days before to 90 after expiry.
  • 2026 Blue Card salary thresholds are route-specific.
  • Social Security and TIE steps follow the grant.

Route Map

Choose Direct Work Modification, Job Search, Highly Qualified, Blue Card, Internship, Telework, Further Study, or Departure

The offer, qualification, salary, project, timing and desired work start determine the safest transition.

Match the route to the outcome

EU, EEA and Swiss graduates use free movement rather than these third-country modifications. A non-EU graduate with a compliant Spanish offer can use the current direct modification to employed residence and work after obtaining the qualification or completion certificate. A graduate with a viable independent project can use the self-employed branch. These routes are preferable when evidence is ready and the graduate wants lawful work activation rather than a search-only period.

The graduate job-search or business-project authorisation is for a person who completed qualifying Spanish higher education at least at EQF level 6. It lasts a non-extendable 24 months and does not permit work. Its purpose is to seek suitable employment related to the completed study level or prepare a business, after which a separate work authorisation is required. The current job-search sheet is explicit on that boundary.

An employer with a highly qualified role can consider the national highly qualified or EU Blue Card route through the competent UGE framework. Qualification, experience, role and salary all matter. A recent graduate or current higher student can use the professional-internship residence route when a genuine programme relates to the qualification. An internship agreement and an employment internship contract have different conditions.

International telework applies to a genuinely remote foreign activity, not an ordinary Spanish job relabelled online. Employees work for foreign companies; self-employed professionals face the current Spanish-client cap and Social Security rules. Further study remains sensible when the next qualification is the real purpose and a new study authorisation is timely. Departure is the lawful fallback where no eligible route can be filed.

Choose this way: ready compliant Spanish contract, direct employed modification or qualifying UGE route; ready viable own project, self-employed modification; no offer but qualifying EQF 6 completion and funds, 24-month search residence; structured relevant placement, internship residence; remote foreign work, teleworker analysis; genuine new course, further study; no qualifying evidence or missed lawful window, leave and assess a consular route rather than work irregularly.

Eligibility

Check Completion, Current Status, Filing Window, Employer, Salary, Profession, Business Viability, Funds, Insurance, and Character

Each transition requires its own complete eligibility test before the student title expires.

Test direct work modification

The current employed and self-employed modification framework requires completion of the relevant study or training and the corresponding qualification or certificate. A graduate does not need to wait for the ceremonial diploma if the institution can issue accepted official completion proof. The applicant must meet character, public-order and status conditions and must not fall within the defined development-cooperation or humanitarian scholarship exclusion.

The employed branch needs a signed contract conditioned on the authorisation becoming effective, compliant conditions and a genuine employer registered with Social Security, current with tax and contributions and able to fund the role. Under the current sheet, part-time remuneration must still reach the full-time annual SMI reference, making a low-hour low-salary offer unsuitable for this branch. The job must satisfy professional licensing or qualification recognition independently.

Self-employment needs licences or progress toward them, professional qualifications, sufficient investment and a credible plan for activity, market, finance and job creation where relevant. Calling one controlled job freelance does not prove business viability.

Test the alternative route specifically

Job-search residence requires a current long-duration study authorisation or extension, completed Spanish higher education at least at EQF level 6, a valid one-year passport, qualifying health insurance, clean records where requested and monthly resources. Personal funds are 100 percent IPREM, currently EUR 600 monthly in 2026, reduced to 50 percent where full accommodation is properly prepaid; family adds 75 percent for the first and 50 percent for each later member under the route.

Blue Card and highly qualified status require a role demanding qualifying higher education or accepted experience. In June 2026 the official salary update set the general Blue Card threshold at EUR 41,356.36 and the reduced threshold at EUR 33,085.09 for qualifying shortage occupations or a required qualification obtained in the prior three years. The national highly qualified route uses its current branch threshold and sponsor rules.

Internship residence generally fits a higher qualification obtained within the prior two years or ongoing qualifying higher study and needs a related agreement or contract. Telework needs foreign-company activity, relationship, qualifications or experience, remote-only duties, income and Social Security compliance. Test one complete route rather than mixing the easiest facts from several.

Documents

Prepare Completion, Identity, Funds, Insurance, Employer, Business Plan, Internship, Remote-Work, and Qualification Evidence

The evidence pack should prove both the route conditions and the exact date the student became eligible to transition.

Establish completion and current status

Request an official university or institution certificate stating the programme, qualification level, completion date and that all academic requirements are passed. Add the transcript and, when available, title application receipt or diploma. Keep the study-authorisation decision, current TIE, passport valid for the route, padrón or residence address, extension receipts and the exact expiry calendar.

For job-search residence, prepare EX-26, the completion record, passport, insurance certificate and full policy, funds declaration and traceable bank, scholarship or support evidence for all 24 months, plus family funds and records where applicable. If the earlier study authorisation lasted under six months, check the required foreign criminal certificate. Foreign public documents generally need apostille or legalisation unless exempt and sworn Spanish or accepted co-official-language translation.

Build the route-specific file

An employed modification needs the conditioned signed contract, role, workplace, schedule, gross annual salary, collective agreement and start clause. Add employer registration, tax and Social Security compliance, corporate identity, activity and financial capacity evidence. For a regulated profession, include recognition or registration. Preserve who pays each fee.

A self-employed file needs project description, market and financial plan, investment and funds, licences or applications, premises or digital-operation needs, client evidence, qualifications and expected employment. Distinguish company capital from personal maintenance.

For Blue Card or highly qualified work, include employer or group records, detailed role, qualifications or accepted professional experience, contract or firm offer and salary calculation against the 2026 threshold. An internship file includes the host's electronic application, qualification date, agreement or employment contract, training programme, tutor, duration, pay, insurance and Social Security plan. The official internship route determines which branch applies.

Telework evidence includes foreign company existence and activity, prior relationship, remote-work permission, foreign employment or client contracts, income, degree or experience, Social Security coverage or Spanish registration and family evidence.

Run a final consistency audit across names, passport and NIE, completion and expiry dates, employer, salary, job and qualification level, insurance, funds and address. Index the complete submission and retain forms, signed documents, translations, fee receipts, register record, notices and every later cure.

Application Steps

Plan Before Graduation, Obtain Completion Proof, Select the Route, File on Time, Preserve Status, Activate Work, and Obtain the TIE

The correct sequence prevents a valid offer from being lost to late filing or premature work.

Follow the dependency order

  1. Audit the calendar. At least three months before expected completion, record final-assessment, completion-certificate and study-expiry dates plus the earliest and latest filing dates for each route.

  2. Compare routes against real evidence. Use the actual contract, salary, project, internship or remote relationship. Do not select job-search residence merely because it sounds like a work permit.

  3. Obtain completion proof. Request the official certificate immediately after all requirements are passed. Correct name, passport, title level and completion date before filing.

  4. Build the complete route pack. Verify employer, professional recognition, business viability, funds, insurance, criminal evidence, legalisation, translation and correct forms.

  5. File through the competent channel. Direct ordinary modification and job-search applications use the prescribed Immigration Office and electronic route, including Mercurio. UGE routes and internship residence use their designated electronic sponsor procedures. Save the signed register receipt.

  6. Pay the correct fee. Use the exact model and item for the route, payer and admission stage. Save NRC or stamped payment and submit it within the stated period.

  7. Monitor notices. Check the electronic file and notification system, answer cure requests with indexed evidence and preserve publication and access dates. Email is only an alert.

  8. Apply only the route's pending rights. A job-search application does not permit work. Under the April 2026 direct modification framework, admission can give the prior stay and family status provisional residence and, in the applicable employed or self-employed branch, provisional work beyond the student ceiling while decided. Confirm this with the accepted admission record for the exact branch before changing hours.

  9. Activate the grant. Where effectiveness depends on Social Security, the employer completes alta or the holder registers the approved self-employment within the decision's period. Do not start under a merely planned employer or project.

  10. Obtain the card and update systems. Apply personally for the new TIE within one month of the effective grant or notification as the route states. Update employer, Social Security, health service, bank, tax address, landlord and family records. Read the decision and card for duration, employer, activity or geographic conditions and calendar renewal immediately.

Costs and Timing

Budget Current Application and TIE Fees, Funds, Insurance, Translation, Professional Recognition, Business Setup, and Processing Gaps

The application fee is usually small compared with the funds, insurance, salary, translation or business evidence required.

Use the current fee schedule

As checked on 26 August 2026, the current immigration fee order sets EUR 10.94 for job-search or business-project residence and EUR 10.94 for modification from long-duration study or training stay to residence and work or work-exempt residence. Initial internship residence is EUR 16.40. A first temporary-residence TIE costs EUR 16.08 and a renewal card EUR 19.30.

An initial self-employment work authorisation lasting at least six months has a current EUR 203.84 work fee. Employee work fees can be EUR 203.84 or EUR 407.71 depending on whether remuneration is below or at least twice SMI under the applicable item. The liable employer and worker items differ, and an employer paying its charge cannot pass it to the foreign worker where prohibited. Generate the live form because a later order can change amounts.

Job-search residence needs resources for its full 24 months: in 2026, normally EUR 600 monthly personal funds, with the stated prepaid-accommodation reduction, plus family percentages, alongside comprehensive insurance. Direct employment instead needs compliant salary and employer capacity. Blue Card uses EUR 41,356.36 general or EUR 33,085.09 reduced 2026 salary thresholds in qualifying cases.

Add insurance, criminal certificates, apostille or legalisation, sworn translation, qualification recognition, professional registration, travel, photographs, appointments and optional advice. Self-employment adds investment, licences, premises, equipment, insurance, accounting, tax and RETA cash. Internship and telework have their own employer, income and Social Security costs.

Plan legal and practical timing

Job-search filing runs from 60 calendar days before study expiry through 90 calendar days after, with possible sanction for late filing. The statutory decision period is 20 days and silence is positive under that route, but obtain formal evidence before relying on it. The title lasts 24 months and is not extendable.

Current direct modification branches publish their own filing, fee and decision rules; the April 2026 sheet states three months for ordinary employed modification and two months for some other branches, so use the exact subsection. UGE and internship clocks differ. Employer onboarding may wait for effective permission and alta, while TIE appointments add time after approval. Keep enough lawful funds and insurance for the gap and never promise an employer a start date that the route cannot support.

Validity and Next Steps

Maintain the New Status, Employment or Project, Social Security, Insurance, Family Position, TIE, Renewal, and Long-Term Residence Record

Approval starts a new compliance cycle whose work scope, duration and renewal rules differ from study.

Follow the exact granted scope

A job-search or business-project authorisation lasts 24 months, is not extendable and does not authorise the holder or accompanying student-family members to work. Continue insurance and funds, search for work suited to the completed study level or develop the project, and file the corresponding employed, self-employed or Law 14/2013 authorisation before starting activity. Finding a job does not activate work automatically.

An ordinary direct employed or self-employed modification is commonly granted for one year under the current branch. Effectiveness can depend on Social Security alta. Keep the contract, payslips, contribution record or business invoices, tax and RETA records, licences and continuing activity evidence. Review any employer, occupation, workplace, activity sector or simultaneous work change against the decision before acting.

UGE, internship and teleworker routes have their own durations and renewal tests. An internship agreement cannot silently become ordinary employment, and telework cannot shift to a Spanish employer under a route that permits only foreign employee activity. Preserve qualification and salary compliance for Blue Card or highly qualified renewal.

Coordinate family, card and longer-term plans

Family status does not automatically become work-authorised because the graduate changes route. Include or modify each family member through the correct branch and maintain their funds, insurance and TIE. Record the effective date on every card and decision, not merely the appointment date. Report address changes and replace a lost or incorrect card promptly.

Calendar renewal several months ahead. Check passport, employment or project continuity, contributions, tax compliance, insurance, criminal or professional records and absence limits. A job loss, business closure or employer failure should trigger immediate route advice rather than waiting for expiry.

For long-term residence and citizenship planning, distinguish study stay from residence. Do not assume every student year counts in full for every route. Preserve all prior decisions, entry dates, cards, padrón, absence records and Social Security history so the later authority can apply the correct counting rule.

If the 24-month search ends without a qualifying switch, further study is possible only through a genuine timely study route; otherwise prepare departure before status becomes irregular. On departure, complete employer or business closure, Social Security, tax, health, lease and address steps while preserving Spanish contribution and tax records for future claims.

Problems and Remedies

Resolve Late Filing, Missing Completion, Weak Offers, Employer or Salary Failure, Insurance Gaps, Premature Work, Refusal, and Status Loss

Protect lawful status and evidence first, then cure, appeal, change route or depart within the real deadline.

Fix timing and evidence early

Do not wait for the printed diploma if the institution can issue an official certificate that all requirements are complete. If a grade, fee or thesis deposit prevents completion, the person may not yet qualify for a completion-based switch; assess a study extension or another lawful route before expiry. Preserve requests to the institution and its response.

A contract can fail because salary, part-time structure, duration, role, professional recognition or employer solvency does not meet the branch. Ask the employer for a compliant conditioned amendment or choose a suitable UGE, internship or other route. Never fabricate full-time salary or pay an employer for sponsorship. If an employer withdraws after filing, notify the authority and obtain immediate advice on replacement or route change.

A self-employed file fails when licences, investment, market or cash flow are vague. Replace estimates with official licence status, contracts, finance and a defensible plan. Blue Card failure can follow the 2026 salary threshold or qualification test; compare national highly qualified or ordinary modification rather than pretending the reduced threshold applies.

Protect status and use the formal remedy

If a job-search holder starts work, stop unauthorised activity and get immigration and labour advice. The title expressly permits search or project preparation, not employment or self-employment. Correct any Social Security or tax records honestly; do not backdate another status. An insurance lapse or insufficient 24-month funds needs prompt compliant replacement and evidence.

For a cure request, answer every numbered issue through the accepted channel before its deadline and retain the receipt. For silence, apply the route's legal effect: job-search has a 20-day positive-silence rule, while ordinary modifications can use negative silence. Obtain a formal certificate or qualified advice before acting on silence. Electronic publication can become notified after ten natural days without access, so monitor the file directly.

A refusal states the administrative or court remedy and period. Preserve the application, fee, notice, source law and new evidence. An appeal does not automatically create a work right beyond what the prior or provisional status allowed. Seek qualified help quickly where work, family or an expiring title is at stake.

If the 90-day late job-search window or another protected filing route is no longer available, do not remain and work irregularly. Assess a lawful in-country alternative only if its conditions genuinely apply; otherwise leave on time and use the proper consular route. Report fake employers, paid sponsorship, passport retention or coercion to labour or police authorities and protect personal safety first.
