Key checks: study in Spain international student

Connect enrolment with everyday student duties in Spain

Covers study in Spain international student in Spain, with practical detail on the route, evidence, timing and remedies.

Before paying matrícula, verify the exact title, centre, campus, teaching mode and language, then download the study plan, first-year subject guides, academic calendar, assessment rules and continuation requirements. Build one calendar that combines tuition, classes, exams, housing, healthcare, scholarship, work and immigration deadlines. Use the official student account daily and keep receipts for every academic or administrative request.

Key points

  • Most full-time years contain 60 ECTS.
  • The subject guide is the assessment contract.
  • Tuition and academic rules vary by region and university.
  • Healthcare and School Insurance are not interchangeable.
  • Work must remain compatible with study status.
  • Grade and enrolment complaints have short local deadlines.

System Map

Understand Official Degrees, Public and Private Universities, ECTS, Teaching Modes, Languages, and Academic Ownership

National structure is shared, but delivery and administration belong to the university, region and programme.

Map the qualification and institution

Spain’s official university cycle includes Grado, Máster Universitario and Doctorado. Verify the exact title and centre in the public RUCT register. A university can also offer continuing education and títulos propios, which can be useful but are not transformed into an official national degree by the university’s legal status. For programme comparisons, the government’s QEDU tool combines official title, location, modality, performance and graduate information from national systems.

Public universities charge autonomous-community public prices and use public academic rules. Private universities set contractual prices and many operational terms within the university framework. Both can award official degrees if the exact programme is registered. A faculty, school or affiliated centre delivers the programme, while a rectorate, student service or regional authority may own a particular decision. Always identify the body responsible for matrícula, assessment, fees, residence evidence or complaints.

Understand credits and delivery

Under the current official-study structure, a normal bachelor or master course contains 60 ECTS. Most Grado degrees contain 240 ECTS, while regulated or European-law programmes can contain 300 or 360. An ECTS credit measures the student’s total planned work, including classes, laboratories, placements, synchronous or asynchronous activity, assignments, assessment and independent study. It is not simply one classroom hour.

Official programmes can be in-person, hybrid or virtual under registered definitions. Immigration eligibility may impose a narrower presence rule than academic registration. Teaching language can differ by subject or group and may include Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician or English. Check the actual teaching guide and timetable, not only the programme’s marketing language.

The national framework defines degree and student-right foundations. Autonomous communities influence public prices and policy. The university approves the plan, calendar, continuation, assessment, recognition and service procedures. The subject coordinator applies the teaching guide. Immigration, healthcare, Social Security, housing and employment belong to separate systems. Keep this ownership map because the international office cannot overrule a faculty grade, and a professor cannot extend a TIE.

Access and Eligibility

Confirm Final Admission, Matrícula Conditions, Language, Workload, Healthcare, Funds, and Lawful Study Status

An admission offer becomes workable only when academic, financial, health and immigration conditions fit together.

Close every academic condition

Read the offer for the exact programme, campus, cohort, teaching mode, language, credit load and deadline. Supply final UNEDasiss, homologación, prior degree, transcript, language or special-test evidence where admission was conditional. A pending access credential can support pre-enrolment but can still block final matrícula or later invalidate it if the condition is not met.

Review prerequisites, progression rules and timetable conflicts. A standard full-time year is 60 ECTS, but a first-year, part-time, disability, work or caring situation may justify a permitted lower load. The load affects tuition, scholarship components, academic continuation and possibly immigration renewal. Regulated degrees can have mandatory placements, health checks, vaccination, criminal-record or professional-language requirements.

Align health and immigration status

EU, EEA and Swiss students use free movement and the applicable healthcare coordination, public entitlement or private cover. Other international students must obtain and maintain the correct study authorisation, passport, funds and health insurance. The current higher-study route covers qualifying recognised higher education delivered in person or hybrid with at least 50 percent physical presence. A programme the university calls hybrid can still fail that immigration threshold.

The authorisation, TIE and university enrolment are different. Confirm whether family members have their own status and whether their accommodation, funds and insurance are covered. Do not enter as a visitor expecting every programme to support an in-country application. Use the route and timing applicable to nationality and course length.

Healthcare must be effective throughout the needed period and usable in Spain. An EHIC supports medically necessary public care during a temporary EU-coordinated stay, not every long-term residence situation. S1 registration, Spanish entitlement through work or family, or a qualifying private policy can apply. School Insurance is a narrow student contingency scheme, not a substitute for ordinary healthcare or immigration-compliant insurance.

Finally test the budget without optimistic work income. Admission and part-time work permission do not guarantee a job or immediate payroll. Include tuition, housing, deposit, utilities, food, transport, books, health, immigration and emergency travel. If the plan depends on a scholarship, read what happens while the decision is pending.

Records and Registration

Complete Matrícula and Preserve the Academic, Payment, Identity, Health, Housing, Work, and Immigration Record

The student portal becomes the operational record, but independent receipts remain essential.

Secure the academic record

After matrícula, download the signed enrolment, selected subjects and groups, credit total, teaching mode, tuition calculation, payment schedule and scholarship or exemption status. Confirm that prerequisite, timetable and examination combinations are possible. Correct errors within the university’s modification period and obtain a new receipt. A payment charge alone does not prove the right subjects are registered.

Download the current teaching guide for every subject. It should state learning activities, attendance, assessment components, weighting, minimum component scores, submission rules, retake, academic-integrity expectations and contact channels. Preserve the version in force when study began because a web page can later change. Add the faculty academic calendar, exam calendar, continuation rules, grade-review process and student-service directory.

Activate the institutional email, learning platform, multi-factor authentication, library, student card and emergency alerts. Keep contact and bank details current. Save important work in an independent backup that respects confidentiality and research rules. Never share the university login with an agent or housing provider.

Maintain the supporting evidence

Keep passport, NIE or TIE, admission and matrícula, tuition receipts, scholarship file, insurance policy or public-entitlement decision, health card, lease and padrón where used. For employment or paid placements, keep the Social Security number, contract or cooperation agreement, alta confirmation, payslips and authorised-hours record. Distinguish a curricular placement from employment while ensuring Social Security treatment is correct.

Prior studies, work experience or university-specific learning are recognised only through a formal credit-recognition decision. Submit the official transcript, course descriptions, hours, credits, assessment and grading evidence by the local deadline. The national framework generally excludes recognition of a final bachelor or master project outside a specific mobility exception and limits certain experience or non-official recognition. Check the resulting academic file and tuition adjustment.

Run a consistency audit across name, identity number, nationality, address, programme, campus, credit load, academic year and dates. Update the university and the competent public body separately after a passport, address or status change. Keep timestamped receipts and notification dates; the disappearance of a portal message should not erase proof of timely action.

Use the System

Plan the 60-ECTS Workload, Follow Teaching Guides, Use Support Early, and Coordinate Housing, Health, Work, and Daily Administration

Treat study as a weekly operating plan rather than a sequence of final exams.

Build the weekly academic system

Translate each subject guide into a calendar of classes, laboratories, placements, readings, assignments, group work, tests and exams. ECTS includes independent work, so a timetable with few classroom hours is not a light course. Identify mandatory attendance, minimum scores and components that cannot be recovered in the final exam. Record all deadlines in the university’s local time and submit early enough to verify the file.

Attend orientation and the first subject sessions because group changes, safety rules, equipment, placements and assessment details often appear there. Use office hours, tutors, library training, writing or maths support, language centre, careers service and peer mentoring before a weak result becomes a failed semester. For group work, agree ownership and keep contributions without exposing another student’s personal data. Follow citation, examination, artificial-intelligence and research-ethics rules exactly.

Students have rights to clear assessment information, objective evaluation and appropriate disability adaptations under the University Student Statute. Contact the accessibility unit early with the competent evidence so classroom, exam, placement and housing needs can be planned. Seek counselling or health support early for distress; an academic deadline does not replace urgent care.

Coordinate daily life without losing study status

Verify a landlord or authorised agent before paying, read the lease, inventory the room, record meter and key handover, and preserve deposit evidence. Use the university housing service only as a source or safeguard to the extent it states, not as a guarantee of every listing. Budget transport time between campus, housing, work and health services.

Keep healthcare usable and know the campus security, 112 emergency and local urgent-care routes. Qualifying students under 28 may also have School Insurance for defined accidents, illness and family misfortune, but most non-accident health benefits require prior application.

If work is permitted, keep it compatible with the timetable and main study purpose. Current higher-study authorisation generally permits compatible work up to thirty hours weekly, but the actual card, contract, self-employment and Social Security rules still apply. Never let cash work, an unregistered internship or schedule pressure undermine attendance, renewal or safety. Check official email and the learning platform every day, then perform a weekly audit of academic, financial and status deadlines.

Costs and Cover

Budget Regional Tuition, Repeat Credits, University Fees, Housing, Health Cover, School Insurance, Study Materials, and Income Gaps

Model the whole academic year, not only first-enrolment tuition.

Calculate academic charges

For an official public degree, multiply the autonomous-community price for the programme and enrolment number by the selected credits, then add the stated administration, student insurance, recognition, transfer or certificate charges. A second or later enrolment in a failed or withdrawn subject can have a higher per-credit price. Non-EU or non-resident pricing can differ where regional law permits it. Use the current university calculator and fee decree, not a national average.

Private tuition can be an annual price, per-credit charge or package plus reservation, enrolment, laboratory, examination or degree fees. Obtain a full written schedule and withdrawal, refund, instalment, progression and price-change terms. Ask how recognised credits affect the bill before assuming prior study saves money.

The general 2026-2027 scholarship can cover eligible first-enrolment public tuition and provide defined income, residence, excellence and variable components, subject to nationality or residence, family finances, assets, academic progress and study load. It does not cover repeat credits, and private-university tuition support is capped at the corresponding public price. Apply by the scholarship deadline even if enrolment remains pending, and plan cash flow until a decision and payment arrive.

Add living and protection costs

Budget rent, deposit, guarantor or insurance cost, utilities, internet, food, local transport, return travel, immigration fees, health insurance, pharmacy, dental and optical care, books, software, laboratory clothing, field trips, printing, devices and course-specific equipment. Add at least one housing or travel disruption reserve. Work income can be delayed and should not be the only plan for the first months.

School Insurance is paid through qualifying enrolment for covered students, but its scope is limited. The Social Security overview covers defined school accident, illness and family-misfortune benefits for qualifying students under 28. Except for a school accident, health benefits generally need prior application. Keep ordinary healthcare or visa-compliant insurance active.

Track planned versus actual costs monthly. Flag a failed subject, reduced scholarship, rent increase, unpaid wage or medical gap immediately. Use university emergency aid, payment plans, public support and lawful work where eligible before turning to expensive credit or an unverified scholarship agent.

Changes and Transitions

Manage Subject Changes, Credit Recognition, Transfer, Mobility, Interruption, Renewal, Graduation, and the Post-Study Transition

An academic change can alter fees, scholarship, healthcare, work and immigration at the same time.

Change the academic record deliberately

Use the university’s add, drop or group-change window and obtain a revised matrícula. Before withdrawing, check tuition liability, repeat-credit classification, scholarship credit minimum, academic continuation, exam rights and immigration workload. Simply stopping attendance may leave the subject enrolled, fee due and failed. For illness, disability, caring duties, violence or another serious event, ask about cancellation, special consideration, part-time status or adapted assessment before the deadline.

Credit recognition, transfer and admission to another degree are separate decisions. Obtain an official transcript and subject descriptions before leaving. The receiving university decides which credits enter the new file; the former university controls transfer certification and outstanding obligations. A recognised subject can alter progression and scholarship calculations, so audit the final record.

For Erasmus or other mobility, agree the learning plan, recognition, tuition responsibility, insurance, travel, housing and immigration consequences before departure. A Spanish study authorisation does not automatically grant unrestricted study or work in another country. Keep the host acceptance, learning agreement, changes, transcript and recognition decision.

Protect lawful status through change

A change of programme, institution, mode, attendance or credit load can affect the basis of a non-EU study authorisation. Confirm the immigration consequence before committing. Extension commonly depends on continued enrolment, progress, funds, insurance and timely filing. A pending university appeal does not itself extend a TIE. EU students should maintain registration and healthcare conditions applicable to their stay.

For an authorised interruption, document the university decision, expected return and effect on accommodation, scholarship, insurance and immigration. If the programme closes or materially changes, obtain the teach-out, transfer, refund and official-record plan in writing.

Begin graduation planning at least one semester early. Check remaining credits, final project, placements, language or competency requirements, fee debts and title application. Obtain the completion certificate and official transcript while the physical diploma is pending. Compare a new study programme, job-search residence, employee, self-employed, highly qualified, internship or departure route under current rules. Do not work beyond the existing authorisation while waiting for a new status. Preserve the completion date because it can start post-study filing windows.

Problems and Help

Resolve Grade, Assessment, Accessibility, Harassment, Fee, Housing, Health, Work, and Immigration Problems

Use the correct owner and protect the shortest review, safety or status deadline.

Use the academic review ladder

Compare the grade with the saved teaching guide, submitted work, rubric and recorded results. Request the professor or tribunal review within the university period. The Student Statute provides access to the work and an individual explanation. If unresolved, file the motivated complaint to the competent body; the university appoints a complaints commission excluding the earlier evaluators. Preserve the grade publication, review appointment, explanation and deadline.

For a portal or submission failure, keep the original file, checksum or metadata, timestamp, full error, support ticket and any confirmation. Notify the subject through the official channel before the deadline. A private message or screenshot of an unsent draft is weak evidence. Academic-integrity allegations require the evidence, rule, hearing opportunity and reasoned decision; do not delete work history or invent sources.

Route welfare and administrative problems correctly

Accessibility denials go to the disability or inclusion unit and academic body under the local procedure. Harassment, discrimination, sexual violence, stalking or retaliation can involve the equality unit, protocol office, student ombuds, security, police, health service and legal support. Use 112 for immediate danger and urgent healthcare for medical risk. Protect evidence without confronting a dangerous person.

A tuition or matrícula error belongs with academic management and finance, followed by the stated university or administrative remedy. A scholarship problem uses the scholarship decision’s allegations or appeal route. A landlord dispute, deposit loss or housing scam is not cured by the international office; use written demand, consumer or tenancy support, police for fraud and qualified legal help.

Unregistered work, unpaid wages, excessive student hours or unsafe placements can involve the employer, university placement office, Social Security, Labour Inspectorate, union or labour court. Do not let an internal discussion consume a legal deadline.

For healthcare or immigration gaps, preserve the application receipt and seek care or status advice immediately. An academic complaint does not suspend an immigration expiry, and an immigration appeal does not reverse a failed grade. Bring the teaching guide, matrícula, chronology, evidence, decision, requested remedy and earliest deadline to the correct service. Escalate to the student ombuds or legal aid when ordinary channels fail or the consequence is severe.
