Social assistance in Spain
Who to ask when money runs short, what a social worker can do and which centre covers your neighbourhood.
Sign up with your regional employment service for job offers, guidance and training
In Spain you register as a jobseeker, called demanda de empleo, with the public employment service of the region where you live, not with one national office. Registration gives you access to job offers, guidance and training, and you need it before you can claim unemployment benefit. To stay registered you must renew it from time to time, which people call sellar la demanda.
How it works
Register with the public employment service to get help finding work.
Registering with the public employment service gives you access to job offers, advice and training, and is often required before you can claim unemployment benefit. You usually register online or at the office for your home address, then have an interview with an adviser. Bring your ID, proof of address and details of your work history and qualifications. Registering as a jobseeker and applying for benefit are often separate steps, so check whether you need to do both.

Your regional employment service decides which office
Some offices register you only by appointment, others let you start online with a digital ID, and the one that covers you can depend on your home postcode.
