Social assistance in Spain
Who to ask when money runs short, what a social worker can do and which centre covers your neighbourhood.
Certificates come from the Registro Civil, the civil registry
The Registro Civil holds the official entries for births, marriages and deaths registered in Spain. Copies are free, and many people request them online with Cl@ve or a digital certificate; otherwise the request goes by post or to the office. You can ask for your own certificate, close family can ask for someone else’s, and others need to give a reason. A birth or marriage abroad is dealt with differently.
How it works
Order an official birth, marriage or death certificate from the civil registry.
You may need a birth, marriage or death certificate for a residence application, a wedding, an inheritance or a name change. It is usually issued by the civil registry where the event was recorded, not where you live now. Check whether the recipient needs a full copy, a short extract or a multilingual version, and whether it must be legalised or carry an apostille for use abroad. Many registries accept orders online or by post.

Start online, or go to the civil registry
Many requests can be made online, but some entries still need a visit or an email to the registry first. Which route applies depends on the entry and the office, and some registries ask you to book a time before you come.
