Registry offices for birth, marriage and death certificates

Your home city may not be the right one: the place of the event decides

Choose the city that holds the entry you need. Each office shows how it takes orders, whether online, by post or at the counter, and what proof of identity or family relationship to bring. Delivery and payment rules differ, so check them before you order, and confirm opening times and booking rules before you travel to an office.

  • Aachen

    Standesamt Aachen — Urkundenstelle

    Bendelstraße 21, 52062 Aachen

Order online without an account, and the certificate comes by post in about two weeks.

For email or postal orders, specify the certificate and provide an ID/passport copy, delivery address and contact telephone. Those orders require payment and proof of payment before dispatch, which can add time. For a representative’s visit bring authority and a copy of the principal’s ID as well as your own identification. Choose the required certificate or certified register extract carefully; ask the receiving organisation which format it needs.

  • Augsburg

    Standesamt Augsburg

    Maximilianstraße 69, 86150 Augsburg

Order the certificate from the town where the event was registered, not from where you live now.

Prepare ID, exact event date and place, names, and proof of relationship, entitlement or authority where needed. Include the former incorporated locality if known. Follow the payment instructions for your chosen form: the current birth-certificate form takes online payment, while written orders may receive a specific payment request. Do not reuse an old payment reference. A PDF copy of your submitted request is not the issued certificate.

  • Berlin

    Standesamt I in Berlin

    Schönstedtstraße 5, 13357 Berlin

Only some foreign events and former German territories are covered, so check your record is held before paying.

Have the full names, event date and place, any former registry name, entry/reference number and an earlier certificate if available. Check the holdings overview or ask the office whether it actually has your entry. Confirm the total charges for your case: it charges €30 for checking its Register- und Urkundensammlung, plus possible search charges of €20–80 when necessary identifying details are missing. These search charges are due even if no certificate can be issued; they are not a flat quote for every certificate. Documents are issued only after payment; the office does not offer delivery with payment deferred. The payment guidance offers electronic payment or bank transfer, which can add bank-processing time.

  • Berlin

    Standesamt Mitte von Berlin

Parochialstraße 3, Persönliche Vorsprache nur nach individueller Vereinbarung, 10179 Berlin

Order online for records from the old Mitte, Tiergarten and Wedding districts, delivered by post only.

Have event date and place, the person’s details and any known registry or entry number ready. Prepare identity, relationship, authorisation or legal-interest evidence as applicable. Ask the receiving organisation whether it needs a standard certificate, multilingual version or certified register copy. Older records go to the archive after the applicable retention period: births 110 years, marriages/partnerships 80 and deaths 30. Historic Berlin 1 is not Standesamt I in Berlin. For a birth with an unknown registry, use the official lookup first; a paid search can cost €20–80 and take up to eight months.

  • Bielefeld

    Standesamt Bielefeld – Urkundenstelle

Niederwall 23, Neues Rathaus, 1. Etage, Zimmer F101, 33602 Bielefeld

Order through the city portal in about two weeks, or book a visit and usually get the certificate at once.

Provide valid ID/passport, full names, event date and place, and any required relationship or legal-interest evidence. Online orders require uploads of the supporting documents. A representative needs authorisation and the authorising person’s ID copy; authorisation must explicitly include collection if they are to take the certificate away. For a newborn or recent death not yet registered, contact the registry about initial registration first. Confirm whether the recipient needs a certificate or certified register printout.

  • Bochum

    Standesamt Bochum — Rathaus

    Willy-Brandt-Platz 2–6, Historisches Rathaus — Ebene 3, 44787 Bochum

Walk in to order without an appointment, or order remotely and pay in advance, since nothing is delivered online.

Bring valid ID or passport for a personal request. Give the person’s full name, relevant event date and exact place, and parents’ names where needed. State the requester’s delivery address, relationship and purpose. Ask about authority for representation. For remote payment use the reference supplied by the office; do not send payment to guessed details. Issue in person is usually possible during the visit, but searches or missing evidence can require more time.

  • Bonn

Standesamt Bonn — Loggia am Stadthaus

    Thomas-Mann-Straße 4, Loggia am Stadthaus, 53111 Bonn

Choose a standard or multilingual certificate and order online, or visit in person to get it straight away.

For a personal request, bring a valid identity card, passport or driving licence. A representative collecting for you needs written authority and a copy of an official identity document. Check which certificate format the recipient requires and provide proof if claiming the pension-purpose fee exemption.

  • Braunschweig

    Stadt Braunschweig — Standesamt

Platz der Deutschen Einheit 1, 38100 Braunschweig

Check which format the receiving authority wants, then order online, by email or by post.

For an email request give first name and birth surname, date of birth, delivery address and a short explanation of the purpose; add evidence of legal interest where required. State the format and number of copies needed. Check current charges and payment instructions on the office’s website rather than sending money using copied bank details. A certificate required for specified health-insurance or German-pension social-benefit applications may be free with supporting evidence. Ask about the correct document if using it abroad; do not assume every multilingual extract replaces every translation or authentication requirement.

  • Bremen

    Standesamt Bremen-Mitte

    Hollerallee 79, 28209 Bremen

Send the order form by post or email, or arrange a personal pickup if you would rather not send an ID copy.

Provide identity evidence, normally a copy of both sides of your ID card or your passport; unnecessary details such as height or eye colour may be obscured. The city recommends encrypted transmission of ID copies; postal submission is also available. A representative needs written authority and identity evidence for both people. Include evidence of your relationship or legal interest where required, the intended use for any exemption, and the certificate format you need.

  • Bremen

    Standesamt Bremen-Nord

    Gerhard-Rohlfs-Straße 62, 2. Etage, 28757 Bremen

Send a written request or book a visit, and check first that the northern office holds your record.

Use the correct certificate-order form and ask which identity and entitlement documents apply. Follow secure-transmission guidance for ID copies. DE-Mail works only with a DE-Mail account. Confirm collection or postal delivery, fee and any exemption with the registry.

  • Chemnitz

    Standesamt Chemnitz

    Bahnhofstraße 53, Moritzhof, 09111 Chemnitz

Pick the right certificate, start the online service and confirm your identity with BundID.

Give names, event date and place, the register number if known, certificate format, number of copies and delivery address. For births include parents’ names; for marriages include both spouses’ details; for deaths include the deceased’s birth details and spouse where applicable. Written requests need an ID copy and evidence of entitlement. Commercial intermediaries are processed as written requests. Ask about fee exemption for statutory pension purposes.

  • Cologne

    Standesamt Köln — Urkundenservice

Gülichplatz 1–3, Haus Neuerburg, 50667 Cologne

Order online or by phone, and book an appointment first if you prefer to come in person.

Prepare ID/passport and event details; confirm entitlement evidence for the requested record. Fees: first certificate €10, further certificates of the same type €5, certified register copy €10, postage €1 folded or €2 unfolded. Online payment uses PayPal/credit card; personal payment cash/card; phone/written orders arrive with a payment request. Allow up to ten working days as an estimate, longer for foreign delivery. For overseas delivery use online ordering.

  • Dortmund

    Standesamt Dortmund

    Friedensplatz 5, 44135 Dortmund

Order online for delivery by post, or call or visit, and send each order through only one channel.

Provide full names, any birth surname, date and precise place of the event, and parents’ names where relevant. Explain the purpose and relationship, and supply authorization or evidence of legal interest when required. Include your complete postal address for delivery. Use the official online service or contact form rather than an ordinary email request. Card payment is available at the counter; telephone and postal orders arrive with a fee notice.

  • Dresden

Standesamt Dresden — Urkundenstelle und Sterbefallbeurkundung

    Lingnerallee 3, Eingang A (Nordseite), 01069 Dresden

Order online and pay straight away by card or PayPal, and the certificate is sent by post.

Provide an identity-document copy. Relatives also provide relationship evidence; other applicants provide evidence of legal interest or authorisation. Give accurate event details and specify the certificate type and purpose. Send postal orders to Standesamt, Postfach 12 00 20, 01001 Dresden. Do not use the old Provianthofstraße visitor address shown in some contact blocks. Online orders are generally not cancellable after submission. For use abroad, ask the receiving authority which certificate format and authentication it needs. Dresden cannot arrange or forward the certificate for an apostille: where required, the certificate holder must apply separately in writing to Landesdirektion Sachsen. An EU multilingual standard-form translation aid can be ordered for €15 initially and €5 for another in the same language; this is distinct from a multilingual civil-status extract.

  • Duisburg

    Standesamt Duisburg Mitte

    Sonnenwall 73-75, 47051 Duisburg

Order online from home, but expect around twelve weeks, far longer than the city’s general estimate.

Upload identification and any necessary authorisation or evidence of entitlement. Check whether the recipient needs a certificate or certified register copy: birth time appears in a certified birth-register copy, not the ordinary birth certificate. Records beyond 110 years for births, 80 for marriages and 30 for deaths are handled by the city archive.

  • Duisburg

    Standesamt Nord

    Duisburger Straße 213, 47166 Duisburg

Order online with Visa or PayPal, and expect dispatch in roughly a week to ten days, but confirm the current wait.

Prepare identity evidence, event names/date/place, any known registry reference and full delivery address. Online evidence uploads are limited to 1 MB. Ask which legal-interest, relationship or representation proof applies. Older registers may require the city archive; its fees differ from registry certificate fees.

  • Duisburg

    Standesamt West

    Körnerplatz 1, 47226 Duisburg

Order online and check with the office before turning up in person, as walk-in visits are not set up.

Prepare identity evidence, event names/date/place, any known registry reference and full delivery address. Online evidence uploads are limited to 1 MB. Ask which legal-interest, relationship or representation proof applies. Older registers may require the city archive; its fees differ from registry certificate fees.

  • Düsseldorf

    Standesamt Düsseldorf

    Inselstraße 17, 40479 Düsseldorf

Order online for delivery by post, and use the contact form if you cannot use the online service.

Prepare your ID, name and address, relationship to the recorded person, certificate type and intended use, plus identifying event details. Representatives need signed authority and the authorising person’s ID copy. Overseas events must already have been entered in Düsseldorf’s register. Delivery follows processing and payment; allow postal transit time.

  • Erfurt

    Standesamt Erfurt — Urkundenstelle

    Bürgermeister-Wagner-Straße 1, Bürgeramt, Altbau, Erdgeschoss, Raum 059, 99084 Erfurt

Order remotely and allow about three weeks, or drop in without an appointment on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays.

Bring your identity document. If the record is not your own, bring evidence of entitlement or legal interest, such as authorisation or a court or land-registry letter. Give enough details to identify the record and state which certificate you need. Personal callers can receive the certificate after processing; do not assume immediate issue in every case. Confirm the applicable fee rather than relying on old PDF prices. For the online form, give the exact event date and place: historical Erfurt registry districts and incorporated suburbs can affect the search, and insufficient details may lead to additional search fees. The form is available in German.

  • Essen

    Standesamt Essen — Gildehof

Hollestraße 3, Gildehof — Eingang und zuständiges Sachgebiet mit Termin bestätigen, 45127 Essen

Order online, in writing or at an agreed appointment, but only if the event was registered in Essen.

Bring valid ID/passport for a personal visit and evidence of entitlement, including written authority where needed. Supply accurate event date/place to help locate the entry. Fees: €10 per certificate or certified extract; €5 for each further identical copy requested and produced together. Information costs and search charges are separate; a search with imprecise details can cost €17–66. Payment methods depend on the application channel. No processing-time estimate is available.
