Civil registry offices for certificates in Spain

Each city’s Registro Civil takes requests in its own way

Registries may ask where and when the event took place, so have the place, date and your ID details ready. Whether you must book a visit depends on the office. Online requests are often the quickest route, so some offices may point you there first.

Start with the free online service, and confirm with the registry which office handles your record before visiting.

Prepare your identity document, the registered person’s full name, event date and place, and any known register/book/page details. State the purpose and required format; a special birth certificate for a first DNI/passport or a multilingual version requires the general application rather than the one-click option. For an authorised request bring the completed signed authorisation and any evidence of representation or legitimate interest required. Ask whether the recipient needs a recently issued certificate even though the certificate itself has no general expiry.
