Social assistance in Spain
Who to ask when money runs short, what a social worker can do and which centre covers your neighbourhood.
Everyone attends in person, children included
The ordinary Spanish passport is issued by the Policía Nacional, usually at the same offices that handle the DNI, but you book the passport service separately. Whoever the passport is for goes in person, and a child needs consent from everyone with parental authority. If you hold another nationality, your own country’s embassy or consulate issues your passport instead.
How it works
Find a passport office and see how to prepare for your appointment.
Passports are issued by the country of your nationality. Citizens living in the country apply at a local passport office, usually in person with a photo that meets the rules and their old passport. Children often need consent from both parents. Processing takes from a few days to a few weeks, so ask about a faster option if you need to travel soon. If you live abroad and need your own country’s passport, contact its embassy or consulate. Foreign residents who cannot get a passport from their own country may qualify for an alien’s passport or a refugee travel document.

Passport and DNI are often handled at the same office, but the bookings are separate, so make sure yours is for the passport. How appointments are offered varies by office, and a child needs consent from everyone with parental authority.
