Civil registries for registering events from abroad in Spain

Find out how your city’s registry wants you to start

Registries run this procedure in different ways: some ask for a phone call or email before anything else, others set up a specific appointment once your papers are ready, and married partners may both be asked to attend. Each registry also sets its own list of documents to prepare.

Use the signed foreign-marriage application. By post, you need an authentic copy of the Spanish DNI (Spanish national identity card) and all passport pages for non-Spanish spouses; in person, originals and copies are required. Prepare current padrón certificates for both spouses, the full marriage certificate, both birth certificates and birth certificates of all children of both spouses. Default validity, if the document gives none, is six months for padrón and one year for spouses’ birth certificates. Add prior divorce/widowhood evidence and NIKAH NAMA for the stated Pakistan/Bangladesh cases. Check sworn translations and authentication, including exemptions and EU multilingual documents. If both spouses reside in Spain, both attend the in-person procedure; anyone unable to understand Spanish needs an adult interpreter.
