Offices that issue a NIE to non-residents in Spain

Foreigners’ offices and police stations both take NIE requests

NIE requests in Spain go to the national police, either at a foreigners’ office (extranjería) or at a police station that deals with documents. Which branch takes yours can depend on your province and whether you come from the EU. What a branch handles, and how it arranges visits, varies, and at the visit you explain why you need the number.

If you already have a NIE, ask about the certificate or update you need instead of a second number.

Prepare completed EX-15, proof of payment of the appropriate 790-012 fee, valid passport or applicable national identity document, and evidence explaining the reason for the request. Check the exact original/copy requirements and any representative’s authority with the office. Select NIE assignment rather than TIE (foreigner identity card) fingerprints or an EU residence-registration appointment. The NIE-assignment fee is €9.84. Choose that item on model 790 code 012 and check the amount generated for your request; other certificates and residence cards have separate fee items.
