Where to apply for a Dutch identity card

Applications and collection work differently in each city

You apply at the municipality where you are registered, and each one sets its own routine. Some ask you to book ahead, some need a second visit to hand over the card and some deliver it. Dutch citizens who live abroad can also use certain border municipalities.

Complete the checklist for your country of residence before booking, with a separate one for each family member.

Complete your personal checklist through nederlandwereldwijd.nl/paspoort-id-kaart/buitenland and bring every required document. If unsure, NetherlandsWorldwide can discuss the checklist on +31 24 724 7247. Residents of Germany must additionally bring an Erweiterte Meldebescheinigung, as explicitly required by Enschede. For children, bring the completed official consent form and required identity documents or copies for the custodians, and bring the child to the appointment. Check current non-resident fees: resident rates do not apply. If urgent, explain this during the appointment; the city gives a separate urgent estimate, with possible delay where the old passport is missing.

Start online with your own DigiD, pay, and book the visit where your photo and signature are taken.

Bring your current passport and ID card where both are held, even expired, and a compliant photo taken within six months. For under-12s complete the custodians’ official consent first, then use the child’s DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) for the digital application, payment and booking. The city also offers a route without DigiD: custodians attend with identity documents or the applicant brings the completed official paper consent and the required valid identity-document copies. Ask about evidence for sole custody. Confirm fees and any collection or delivery conditions; do not treat digital pre-application as a fully remote identity-card issue.
