Where to apply for a Dutch identity card

Applications and collection work differently in each city

You apply at the municipality where you are registered, and each one sets its own routine. Some ask you to book ahead, some need a second visit to hand over the card and some deliver it. Dutch citizens who live abroad can also use certain border municipalities.

Apply by appointment at the library, and remember that urgent applications are only possible at the town hall.

Bring all passports and identity cards, even expired ones, a compliant colour photo no more than six months old and payment. If a passport is held by an embassy, consulate or visa agency, bring written proof. The child attends application and collection. Under 12, a parent/guardian accompanies both visits and everyone with parental authority must consent. An absent consenting parent can use DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) or the written form with an ID copy. From 12, parental consent is not required and the child may apply/collect independently. Fingerprints are not taken below 12.
