Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

Book a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon online, or check for same-day morning slots, and allow extra time for the photo.

Bring your old ID or passport, a birth certificate for first issuance and a compliant digital photo. After naturalisation, add the naturalisation certificate and translated birth and, if applicable, marriage certificates. For children needing guardian consent, bring guardian ID and consent, plus sole-custody or death evidence where applicable.
