Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

Book a slot, and if you need ID urgently, ask about a temporary card valid for up to three months.

Bring the previous ID or passport and a digital photo from a registered photographer or municipal machine. Paper photos are not accepted. The machine lowers only to about 110–120 cm, so use a photographer for very young children. Under 16: prepare both parents’ written consent; one may attend with the child and bring the other parent’s ID/passport for signature comparison. Ask about evidence where only one person has custody.
