Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

If you want the card delivered home, ask before applying, as your old document stops being valid at once.

Bring your existing photo ID and a digitally supplied biometric photo from a certified photographer or dm, or use the office device. Dortmund recommends an external certified provider for babies and children up to six. Civil-status documents are recommended to resolve possible register discrepancies, not universally required. Under 16, joint custodians must both give written consent; bring the court decision if relying on court-awarded sole custody. Bring the old card again when collecting.
