Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

Keep your collection slip, as its serial number lets you check the production status of your card.

Bring your old identity card or a valid passport; babies and young children without an identity document need their original birth certificate. Bring a digital-photo QR code or have the photo taken at the centre; Bremen recommends a photographer for small children. A current-name certificate may be needed. For under-16s, bring the absent guardian’s consent and ID original or copy, or proof of sole custody. Children aged ten and above sign themselves; fingerprints are taken from age six.
