Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

After naturalisation, book the separate first-card category, which is offered only at the Stadthaus.

Bring your previous identity card or passport and a digitally transmitted biometric photograph from a certified provider, or use the city equipment. Paper passport photos are not accepted for this application. For children, prepare the birth certificate and the absent custodial parent’s consent and ID copy where required. After naturalisation or a name change, check the additional civil-status documents and translation requirements.
