Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

Book an appointment at any citizens’ service office in Berlin, and keep your booking confirmation.

Bring your previous document even if expired, another valid identity document if available, and a digital biometric photo from a certified provider or the office equipment. Paper photos are not accepted; arrange a certified-provider photo beforehand for children under six. First documents or changed personal details may require birth, marriage or partnership certificates. Newly naturalised applicants need the naturalisation certificate and former-country passport/ID or an LEA identity certificate. For a child with cohabiting joint-custody parents, an absent parent’s written consent and ID are required; if parents live apart, the applying parent must be the one at the child’s registered main home. Check the official custody checklist before booking.
