Citizens’ offices that issue ID cards in Germany

Compare photo options, appointments and collection by city

You normally apply for the Personalausweis at the citizens’ office where you are registered, and each city sets its own way of working. Appointment rules, photo arrangements and the handover of the finished card vary from office to office. If you have an old card, take it with you.

Use the office’s photo kiosk, and ask whether you can collect your finished card from its collection box.

Bring your existing identity card or passport. A birth certificate is required for first issuance in Augsburg if you cannot present an existing old identity card or passport; a marriage certificate is required if you married since issuance and the old identity card does not show your new name. Use a digital biometric photo from a certified photographer or drugstore, or the office kiosk, which is unsuitable for children under five. For a child under 16 with two guardians, both must sign: one may attend the application and the other the collection, each with ID. Written consent with the absent parent’s ID copy is accepted only exceptionally with prior approval from the passport authority.
