Social assistance in Spain
Who to ask when money runs short, what a social worker can do and which centre covers your neighbourhood.
Each region keeps its own register of couples
Registered partnerships in Spain are called parejas de hecho, and there is no single national register. They are recorded by the region where the couple lives and, in some places, by the town hall. The certificate proves that you are registered, or that you are not, so where to ask depends on which register your entry sits in.
How it works
Get official proof of a registered partnership or legal cohabitation, or that none is registered.
Some procedures, such as a family residence application, ask for proof that you are in a registered partnership or legal cohabitation, or that you are not registered with anyone. Depending on the country, the certificate comes from the town hall, the civil registry or a regional register of couples. You usually need your ID, and sometimes your partner’s consent if they are not applying with you. Check which version the recipient needs and whether it must be translated or legalised. Getting a certificate is not the same as registering a new partnership.

The issuing office depends on where your partnership is entered
Some registers answer requests online, others hand over a certificate at the counter or post it to you, and either partner can usually ask for proof of their own entry.
