Registration offices for your new address in Germany

Some cities work by appointment, others take walk-ins

The office that registers you depends on where your new home is, and some cities run several registration offices. Each one has its own way of arranging a visit. Take your passport, the form and your landlord’s confirmation with you.

Bring all available German and foreign passports or identity cards for everyone registering, the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, available civil-status evidence and birth certificates for minors. For a child, provide the other parent’s consent or evidence of your sole right to determine the child’s residence; consent is not needed when the child moves with one parent and they were already living apart from the other parent. Foreign civil certificates generally need a German translation, with exceptions for documents already in German or accompanied by an official EU translation aid; check whether authentication is needed. Owners signing their own housing confirmation must also provide proof of ownership.
