Offices for registering your address in Iceland

Which one you visit depends on where you come from

Address registration in Iceland is handled by national bodies, not by each town hall. Some cases start online and end with a visit and your original passport, while for permit holders the Directorate of Immigration passes the address on.

  • Kópavogur

    For residence permit holders

    Útlendingastofnun

    Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur

Send the address notification form to the immigration authority, which needs it before your permit can be issued.

Check that the form identifies your intended Icelandic home correctly and matches your permit application. If you already supplied the address during that application, confirm whether another notification is necessary.

  • Reykjavík

For EU, EEA and Swiss citizens

    Þjóðskrá Íslands — Reykjavík

    Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavík

Apply online, ask your employer to confirm the job within 30 days, then show your original documents in person.

Submit a valid passport or identity card and the employment evidence requested for your case. Bring your passport or accepted travel document in original to the visit. Birth and marital-status certificates are optional, but bring originals if you included them in your application. Documents must be in Icelandic or English; otherwise provide a certified translation together with the original. If you previously registered out of Iceland and have returned, submit a new A-271 application within three months; an existing kennitala does not replace this application.

  • Reykjavík

    Þjóðskrá Íslands — Reykjavík

    Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavík

Appear in person within seven days of arriving, with every adult and school-age child present to identify themselves.

Bring a passport or another valid travel document and your Icelandic address. If a child is moving without both parents who have custody, check the separate custody requirements before the visit. Getting a kennitala does not by itself register your legal domicile.

  • Reykjavík

    For international students

    Þjóðskrá Íslands — Reykjavík

    Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavík

Apply online with proof of enrolment and a statement that you can support yourself, then show your ID in person.

Prepare a valid passport or ID, enrolment confirmation, the linked declaration of sufficient funds and insurance evidence. An EHIC may suffice only with home-country confirmation that insurance continues during your stay. If eligible for an S1, present it to Registers Iceland and ensure Iceland Health also receives it. Arrange comprehensive cover until Icelandic public coverage starts; Iceland Health generally states a three-month wait, with exceptions for transferable rights. Birth and marital-status certificates are optional, but bring originals if submitted. Documents in other languages need certified Icelandic or English translations with originals.

  • Reykjavík

    For returning residents

    Þjóðskrá Íslands — Reykjavík

    Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavík

Register your home in person within seven days of arriving back, and renew any registered cohabitation separately.

Bring valid identification: a passport, Icelandic driving licence or accepted travel ID. Have your new Icelandic address ready. If you need to re-register cohabitation, request the separate form from Registers Iceland.
