Offices where you can deregister in Germany

Post, online or in person: it depends on the city

You report your departure to the registration office of the place you are leaving, and you can often choose between a visit, a written form and an online request. Open your city to see which of these its offices accept and what identification to send or bring.

Apply online or send the paper form by post, and allow about three to four weeks for processing.

For paper submission, complete and sign the deregistration form and include an identity-card or passport copy. Spouses, registered partners and family members leaving the same home can share a form; more than four people need another form, with one signature per form. Unrelated people each need their own signed form. For children under 16, the person whose home they leave signs. You may still need to notify vehicle-registration or business authorities separately; when a Munich secondary home is deregistered, the city informs its tax office automatically.
