Registry offices for birth, marriage and death certificates

Your home city may not be the right one: the place of the event decides

Choose the city that holds the entry you need. Each office shows how it takes orders, whether online, by post or at the counter, and what proof of identity or family relationship to bring. Delivery and payment rules differ, so check them before you order, and confirm opening times and booking rules before you travel to an office.

Order online, by post or in person, but not by email, and a newborn’s first registration is handled separately.

Prepare the event’s names, date and place, identification and any authorisation or entitlement evidence. Ask whether the recipient needs an ordinary, multilingual or certified register document. Birth registers pass to the archive after the statutory retention period, normally 110 years. The Schleswig-Holstein electronic register can also make eligible records registered electronically since 2009 available through another state registry office; confirm that your particular record is accessible.
