Register with the Spanish tax office as a private individual

Your NIF is the number Spanish tax authorities use to identify you

In Spain the tax number is called the NIF (número de identificación fiscal). Spanish citizens use their DNI number and foreigners normally use their NIE. The Agencia Tributaria enters private individuals in its tax census and is also where you update your tax address. Starting a business or freelance activity needs a different registration.

How it works

Register with the tax office

Get a tax number or update your tax registration.

You may need a tax identification number to work, rent a home, open a bank account or start a business. In some countries it is issued automatically when you register your address; in others you request it from the tax office. If you become self-employed, you usually also have to register your business for tax. Bring your ID and proof of address, and check whether you already have a number before applying so you do not end up with a duplicate record.

Tax offices that register new taxpayers in Spain

Most of Spain is covered by the national tax agency, while the Basque Country and Navarre run their own tax offices. For a new tax number some offices want you to book a specific option, so read an office’s details first.
