Immigration offices for EU, EEA and Swiss residents

Each city’s immigration office has its own way of taking enquiries

These cases go to the local immigration office, which can be a city department, a district office or, in Berlin, the Landesamt für Einwanderung. Many ask you to email, phone or use a contact form before they give an appointment. Pick your city to see which cases its office handles and what to prepare, such as your passport and proof of your address.

    Kruppstraße 16, 45128 Essen

Start by email, send your documents for checking, and ask whether electronic ID means you can skip the visit.

For the ordinary 5-year case, Essen asks for a valid passport or identity card, current registration certificate, rental agreements covering the last 5 years, health insurance and livelihood evidence such as payslips or a tax adviser’s confirmation for self-employment. Ask what records prove the relevant periods or an earlier-acquisition case. The national standard fee for this certificate is €10 under § 47(3) AufenthV, while Essen charges €18. Ask the department to confirm the charge and payment instructions for your case before paying.

Email the immigration authority to learn how to report your stay within three months of arriving.

Have your passport or Swiss identity card, entry date, current address and any existing residence documents ready. The federal notification rule requires identity, previous names/addresses/nationalities, purpose and dates of residence, and relevant family-relationship details. Ask for the individual Swiss checklist, document format, digital-photo requirements and current charge before visiting or paying.
