Tax offices and city treasuries that issue certificates

Check the office responsible for you before you send a request

A tax certificate normally comes from the Finanzamt that is responsible for you, which is not always the one nearest to you. Certificates about money owed to a city come from its treasury instead. For each city you can see how its offices take requests, whether they want signed copies, and how the certificate reaches you.

16 offices
  • Aachen

    Finanzamt Aachen-Stadt

    Krefelder Straße 210, 52070 Aachen

Post the signed form in two copies to your responsible tax office, and check first that it is Aachen-Stadt.

Use the appropriate foreign-authority form or the German tax administration’s official form. Include your tax number or tax ID, personal details, the foreign country and income information, including the paying institution and securities-account details where applicable. Request the relevant income year. The returned certificate must be the original with the tax office’s signature and seal and no deletions. Confirm any additional requirements with the recipient; no issue date is promised.

  • Augsburg

    Stadtkasse Augsburg

Rathausplatz 2a, Verwaltungsgebäude 2, 1. OG an der Kasse, 86150 Augsburg

Apply online and wait for it by post, since personal collection is not available.

Check any city tax arrears before applying and follow the form’s requested details. Online submission requires payment online. Cash payment outside cashier hours is not possible. Confirm any representation requirements and the recipient’s required document age; no fixed processing period is promised here.

  • Berlin

    Finanzamt Charlottenburg

    Bismarckstr. 48, 10627 Berlin

Call to arrange a counter visit, or simply leave your documents in the tax office letterbox.

Use the relevant official foreign form or German administration form and sign it yourself or through your authorised tax representative. Specify the treaty country and relevant income. Have your tax ID or tax number ready for enquiries; confirm submission requirements before sending originals.

  • Bielefeld

    Finanzamt Bielefeld-Außenstadt

    Ravensberger Str. 125, 33607 Bielefeld

Send two signed copies of the request by post, or call the state citizen service to arrange a counter visit.

Prepare your tax reference or tax ID, personal details and information about the foreign income, country and relevant year. Use the suitable foreign-authority form or the official German form; add paying-institution and securities-account details when relevant. One copy remains with the office and the other is returned after review. The certificate must be an original bearing the tax office’s signature and seal without deletions. Confirm any recipient-specific requirements before sending it abroad.

  • Bielefeld

    Finanzamt Bielefeld-Innenstadt

    Ravensberger Straße 90, 33607 Bielefeld

Check the office named on your tax letters before applying, because the outer areas belong to the Außenstadt office.

Choose the appropriate foreign-authority form or the German tax administration’s official form. Include your tax number or tax ID, the foreign country, income year and income details, including the paying institution and securities-account information where applicable. Keep the returned original with the office’s signature and seal and no deletions. Ask the recipient about any additional requirements; a same-day certificate is not promised.

  • Bonn

Bundesstadt Bonn — Debitorenbuchhaltung und Zahlungsabwicklung, Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigungen

Berliner Platz 2, Stadthaus, 53111 Bonn

Request it online without an account or by phone, and agree any personal visit in advance.

A valid identity card (Personalausweis) is needed for an application. Have your own or business details and intended use ready, and confirm any representative’s authority. Ask about the calculated charge and payment arrangements. The postal address is Bundesstadt Bonn, 53103 Bonn; the visitor postcode is 53111.

  • Düsseldorf

    Stadtkasse Düsseldorf — Forderungsmanagement

    Erkrather Straße 349, 40231 Düsseldorf

Apply through the city’s online link, but ask first if you do not live or run a business in Düsseldorf.

Prepare an official identity document and the details requested for your own or the company’s application. Confirm your right to represent another applicant. The certificate is sent only to the taxpayer or an entitled representative. Ask about any purpose-based fee exemption and the delivery arrangements.

  • Frankfurt am Main

    Finanzamt Frankfurt am Main

Gutleutstraße 118–124, 60327 Frankfurt am Main

Apply in writing, with two copies, to support a claim for relief from foreign tax under a tax treaty.

Use the appropriate official foreign or German form. Identify the treaty country and requested period or date, and prepare two copies. Check any additional foreign-use certification separately. Keep your current tax correspondence available for enquiries.

  • Gelsenkirchen

    Finanzamt Gelsenkirchen

    Ludwig-Erhard-Str. 7, 45891 Gelsenkirchen

Ask by phone, in writing or through the online tax portal, with no special form needed.

Give your name, tax number or tax ID and the number of copies needed. Ask for the German-English Certificate in Tax Matters if required. The recipient decides how recent the certificate must be; do not assume a standard validity period. Keep the original without deletions. If you recently started a business and have little tax-office history, this can be noted in the certificate.

  • Hamburg

Finanzamt Hamburg-Altona — Informations- und Annahmestelle (IAS)

    Holstenplatz 18, Holstenhaus, 22765 Hamburg

Drop in without an appointment on set days, or ask in writing, by phone or through your online tax account.

State your full name or business name, address, tax number or identification number and purpose. The office may request further information. For a trade licence, the district office can obtain the certificate directly if you request this and release the responsible Finanzamt from tax secrecy for that purpose.

  • Hanover

Landeshauptstadt Hannover — Fachbereich Finanzen, Arbeitsgruppe Gewerbesteuer, OE 20.31.1BS

    Osterstraße 31, 30159 Hanover

Email an informal request and say what you need it for, for example a taxi licence or a public tender.

For an individual, provide name, birth date, birth place and country, current address and any existing city tax reference or Finanzamt number. For a company, provide name, address, commercial-register number and court, plus the managing director’s name, birth date, birth place and country. Ask the recipient how recent the certificate must be.

  • Kiel

    Finanzamt Kiel

    Feldstraße 23, 24105 Kiel

Make an informal request by phone, or book an appointment if you would rather go in person.

Provide your full name or business name, address, tax number or identification number, and the reason the certificate is needed. The tax office uses its own records, and no further documents are required for this Finanzamt certificate. Confirm any fee and delivery arrangements with the office.

  • Magdeburg

    Finanzamt Magdeburg

    Tessenowstraße 10, 39114 Magdeburg

Have your German tax residence confirmed to reduce foreign tax on dividends or royalties, and call before you visit.

Use the appropriate official foreign form, or the German form when none is provided. Complete Part I; the Finanzamt completes Part II. An original is required, so electronic completion alone is not submission.

  • Munich

    Stadtkämmerei — Stadtkasse Landeshauptstadt München

    Landsberger Straße 36, 80339 Munich

Order it online, or send the application form by post, email or fax.

For a personal application, bring identification, proof of payment and any necessary authorisation. For post, email or fax, send the completed application and payment proof. Advance payment alone is not an application. The online service requires online payment before submission; check the city’s current payment instructions.

  • Nuremberg

Kassen- und Steueramt Nürnberg — Kasseninformationszentrum (KIZ)

    Theresienstraße 1, 1. Obergeschoss, 90403 Nuremberg

Apply online and pay when you submit, then have it delivered or collect it by appointment.

Follow the form’s requested applicant details and check how you want to receive the certificate. For someone else’s application or collection, confirm the authority required. Ask the recipient how recent the certificate must be; the city sets no fixed validity or processing period.

  • Wiesbaden

    Finanzamt Wiesbaden

    Abraham-Lincoln-Park 3, 65189 Wiesbaden

Send a written request with two copies to get German tax residence confirmed, and phone before any visit.

Use the appropriate official foreign or German form. Identify the treaty country and requested period or date, and prepare two copies. Check any additional foreign-use certification separately. Keep your current tax correspondence available for enquiries.
