Offices for social assistance across Germany

Your address decides which office is yours

A single city can have many offices for living-cost support, each looking after certain districts or surnames, and some also help older people or people with disabilities. Look up your city to see what each office handles, how it wants to be contacted first and what to bring to the visit.

    Jobcenter Gelsenkirchen — Ahstraße 22

    Ahstraße 22, 45879 Gelsenkirchen

If you qualify, support can start from the first day of the month you apply online.

Follow the current claim form and its evidence requests, including the income, assets and household information relevant to assessment. Ask which documents your circumstances require; do not delay a timely application merely while waiting for a routine consultation. For an existing claim, use the correct renewal or change service. The Jobcenter asks for renewal before the current award period ends, not at the last moment. Since 1 July 2026, SGB (German Social Code) II cash support is called Grundsicherungsgeld. You may still see the older name Bürgergeld on some forms and letters. Existing decisions remain valid; do not submit a new claim solely because the benefit was renamed. Official forms and online services may still show the old name during the transition. Continue to follow your own renewal dates, evidence requests and change-reporting duties.

Referat Soziales Gelsenkirchen — Sozialhilfe und Grundsicherung

    Vattmannstraße 2-8, 45879 Gelsenkirchen

Email or call to arrange the required appointment, then use the online form that fits your situation.

For Grundsicherung prepare identity, applicable residence/disability evidence, complete bank statements for three months, housing and heating records, and income/assets evidence. A court-appointed representative brings evidence of their authority; additional evidence may be requested. The other subsistence-help route has its own individual checklist. Ask whether an application fee applies. Current building works can affect access; confirm accessibility needs before visiting.
