Where to apply for social assistance in the Netherlands

Applications go to the municipality where you live

Each municipality sets its own first step. In some places you apply online with DigiD, in others you phone first, which can fix your application date, or sign up on werk.nl before an adviser contacts you. Offices also have their own help for people who find the form hard, and their own list of what to prepare.

  • 's-Hertogenbosch

Weener XL — Werk & Inkomen

    Oude Vlijmenseweg 200, 5223 GT 's-Hertogenbosch

Start with a phone call, which sets your application date, and an income adviser then explains what to prepare.

Bring valid identification to the first interview and gather the evidence on your adviser’s checklist. Report changes while the application is pending. If you are still awaiting a decision after four weeks, ask your income adviser about an advance; complete timely evidence and apparent eligibility are conditions. Free independent application support is available through Koo on +31 73 615 32 25.

  • Alkmaar

    Zaffier — Locatie Stadskantoor

    Mallegatsplein 10, 1815 AG Alkmaar

Activate your CV on the national job site, then apply with DigiD or use the forms help desk.

Prepare your and your partner’s valid ID, three months of bank and savings statements for you, your partner and resident children up to 17, plus evidence of assets, housing and debts. Further evidence depends on your circumstances. If scanning is genuinely impossible, Zaffier allows copies to be sent or brought later; ask how to complete your application.

  • Almelo

    Stadhuis Almelo

Haven Zuidzijde 30, 7607 EW Almelo

Register on the national job site, complete a short eligibility form, and book your appointment from the email you receive.

Have your login available and follow the municipality’s appointment instructions for supporting evidence. Ask which income, asset and household documents your case requires. If under 27 and in a difficult situation, contact the municipality immediately to discuss the search-period exception.

  • Almere

Stadhuis Almere — balie Sociaal Domein

    Stadhuisplein 1, 1315 HR Almere

Apply online with DigiD, or call or visit the town hall’s social services team if you need help with it.

Prepare DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites), an email address and requested financial evidence, saved on a computer. Almere advises against applying on a phone. Homeless intake asks, if available, for valid identification (national rules since 2026 also allow a valid driving licence for a bijstand application), three months of payment/savings-account records and income evidence. Do not delay seeking help because documents are missing. Contact the municipality if you lack email or internet.

  • Alphen aan den Rijn

    Gemeentehuis Alphen aan den Rijn

Stadhuisplein 1, 2405 SH Alphen aan den Rijn

Register on werk.nl first, then phone or walk in to the service desk to start your application.

Prepare identification, income evidence, bank statements for the last three months, assets and debts, rent or mortgage information and dates of your last employment. Include your partner’s evidence if you live together. Copies and printing can be arranged at intake. National rules since 2026 allow a valid driving licence for a bijstand application. Ask what additional documents your circumstances require.

  • Amersfoort

Gemeente Amersfoort — Werk en Inkomen

    Stadhuisplein 3, 3811 LM Amersfoort

Adults from 27 apply online, while 18 to 26 year olds register on werk.nl first and ask for their application link.

Prepare DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) and information about housing, employment history, income and assets. Follow the evidence checklist and appointment invitation. For applications from age 27, an interview invitation is emailed to you within three working days; this is not a benefit decision. Under-27s in vulnerable or difficult circumstances should discuss exemption from the usual four-week work or education search period with the municipality.

  • Amstelveen

    Raadhuis Amstelveen

    Laan Nieuwer-Amstel 1, 1182 JR Amstelveen

Book an appointment or walk in to talk through your situation, the rules and what other support you may get.

Prepare valid identification or a residence document, DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites), and income and asset evidence for yourself and your partner, including bank statements and housing, benefit or pension documents. A partner must confirm the subsequent application using DigiD through an emailed link before processing can begin. Ask for help if you cannot complete the digital form.

  • Amsterdam

    Stadsloket Zuidoost

Anton de Komplein 150, 1102 CW Amsterdam

Walk in on a weekday if the municipal application is difficult, and staff can point you to further help.

Gather your financial documents before starting. Tell the adviser if digital access prevents applying; ask what assistance is appropriate.

  • Apeldoorn

Samen055 Centrum en dorpen / CODA Centrale Bibliotheek

Vosselmanstraat 299, CODA — eerste verdieping, 7311 CL Apeldoorn

Get free advice on money problems and benefits, with a regular walk-in session at the central library.

For an initial enquiry explain the problem and any urgent deadline, such as a benefit letter, threatened eviction or utility disconnection. Have relevant letters and an outline of income, expenses and debts available to discuss; ask which documents are needed for the next step rather than treating this as a universal application checklist. A formal benefit request has its own evidence and appointments. Administrators applying for debt help for a client use the municipality’s separate bewindvoerder route, with its specific document checklist; that entire checklist is not a condition for an ordinary walk-in question.

  • Apeldoorn

  • Arnhem

Gemeente Arnhem — Werk & Inkomen, documentenbalie Stadskantoor

    Eusebiusbuitensingel 49, 6828 HZ Arnhem

Apply online with DigiD and send any missing documents afterwards, then wait for an interview invitation.

Upload requested evidence via MijnArnhem, deliver copies at the specified counter where copying is free, or post to Cluster Werk & Inkomen, Afdeling Aanvragen, Antwoordnummer 3740, 6800 XA Arnhem. If your earlier Arnhem benefit ended because you started work within the previous nine months, ask your caseworker about the shorter application; that form is not available online. Request that shorter form through your caseworker on 0800-1809 between 09:00 and 12:00; it is sent by post. For help with an ordinary online application, you can go to the IDO (digital government help desk) desks at Rozet Centrum, Presikhaaf and Kronenburg.

  • Arnhem

Rozet Centrum — Informatiepunt Digitale Overheid

    Kortestraat 16, 6811 EP Arnhem

Get free help with the online application at the library’s digital government help desk, no membership needed.

Have valid ID, your own DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) access and the documents requested for your individual circumstances ready. Keep passwords and login codes private and enter them yourself. Arnhem recommends a computer/laptop rather than phone/tablet for the application. If some attachments are missing, submit the application anyway and provide the remaining evidence later through MijnArnhem, post or the city's designated document counter. Check email and spam for the receipt; contact the municipality if it does not arrive. The library does not replace that formal confirmation.

  • Arnhem

Rozet Kronenburg — Informatiepunt Digitale Overheid

    Kronenburggalerij 7, 6831 ET Arnhem

Library staff go through the online application with you, but they cannot decide whether you qualify.

Visit during the help desk’s staffed hours, not just library opening hours, for free help with the online application.

  • Assen

    Werkplein Drentsche Aa

    W.A. Scholtenstraat 22, 9403 AK Assen

Residents of Assen, Aa en Hunze and Tynaarlo apply online with DigiD, and can walk in or phone for help.

Upload clear scans or photos, preferably one file per document. Keep originals if sending copies. Ask WPDA before using the Javastraat drop-off: the office’s current address is different.

  • Barneveld

    Gemeentehuis Barneveld — Publiekszaken

    Raadhuisplein 2, 3771 ER Barneveld

Phone the town hall to make an intake appointment first, where staff explain your options and how to apply.

Ask the meldingsbalie which identity and financial documents your household must provide; a complete intake checklist is not available. Prepare an overview of income, assets and living arrangements for the discussion. If documents are requested later, they may be handed to reception during opening hours or placed in the town hall letterbox to the left of the entrance. Once receiving benefit, report income and household changes as instructed; incomplete monthly income information can delay payment.

  • Bergen op Zoom

    Stadskantoor Bergen op Zoom

Jacob Obrechtlaan 4, 4611 AR Bergen op Zoom

Apply online with DigiD, and if you live with a partner they must sign in with their own DigiD too.

Have your DigiD (the Dutch digital ID for government websites) and any partner’s separate DigiD ready; follow the questionnaire and subsequent evidence request. Without DigiD, contact the municipality promptly or visit the town hall to report that you need bijstand; do not wait silently for activation. ISD says this notification usually matters for the start date, but you must still complete the application. Ask ISD for urgent help if you cannot wait.
