Where to ask for financial assistance in Iceland

The municipality where you are registered is your starting point

Financial assistance is handled by each municipality’s social services, so apply to the one where you have your legal address. Offices differ on whether you phone first, apply through a town portal or visit a service centre, so confirm opening times and how to arrange a meeting before you travel.

22 offices
  • Akranes

    Akraneskaupstaður — Bæjarskrifstofan

    Dalbraut 4, 300 Akranes

Phone the municipal office first for guidance, then apply each month through Ísland.is.

Prepare the evidence requested during application, including proof of active job search or medical evidence if unable to work. Ask staff which financial records and current rates apply. Contact them if you cannot use electronic identification. Starting the online form is not submission. Report changes in income or family circumstances promptly. Assistance paid on incorrect or misleading information can be reclaimed. The linked rules request the previous year’s asset/income summary and all applicant/spouse income and payments for the application month. Include employment-service registration, benefit-status evidence and active job search where applicable.

  • Akureyri

    Velferðarsvið Akureyrarbæjar

    Glerárgata 26, 600 Akureyri

Apply through the town’s service portal or on a paper form, and phone to arrange a meeting with a welfare adviser.

Prepare household and housing details, reasons for applying, tax return and assessment, tax-withholding records and payslips or benefit statements for the last two months. Provide equivalent information for your cohabiting partner and details of domestic and foreign income and assets. If you or your partner lived abroad this year or the last tax year, the rules also request a tax return and asset declaration from the country of nationality. Include a residence permit where applicable. The adviser may request bank balances, debt information and a rental agreement. If unemployed, provide Directorate of Labour registration, benefit-entitlement and payment evidence plus job-application records. Applicants able to work are expected to seek at least one job a week; discuss illness or other barriers with the adviser.

  • Egilsstaðir

    Skrifstofa Múlaþings — Egilsstaðir

    Lyngási 12, 700 Egilsstaðir

Call to request an interview with social services, whose staff can also help you with the application.

Prepare last year’s tax return, current withholding information and recent income records, including the preceding three months, for yourself and your partner. Include housing, household and asset details; foreign tax and asset declarations are requested if you or your partner lived abroad this year or last tax year. Jobseekers provide Labour Directorate registration and job-application evidence; incapacity needs medical evidence. Requested documents missing after two weeks can lead to dismissal. Explain urgent need promptly; justified emergencies allow exceptions to document requirements. Representatives need written authority.

  • Garðabær

    Þjónustuver Garðabæjar

    Garðatorg 7, 210 Garðabær

Apply online for help when living costs become temporarily too much, and phone to book advice at the service centre.

Provide tax returns and withholding statements for you and your partner, plus income and benefit records for the last two months. If able to work, provide confirmation of job-search registration or exhausted unemployment-benefit entitlement. If unable to work, provide a medical certificate. Use the official application portal and supply any missing evidence requested.

  • Grindavík

    Þjónustuver Grindavíkurbæjar

    Víkurbraut 62, 240 Grindavík

Talk to a social adviser about money, housing or family worries, and request it through the town’s service portal.

Explain the difficulty and the support you need. Ask the adviser which documents are relevant to your circumstances before supplying sensitive information.

  • Hafnarfjörður

    Þjónustuver Hafnarfjarðarbæjar

    Strandgata 8–10, 220 Hafnarfjörður

Apply online, then show your photo ID at the service centre within two working days of a first application.

Have valid photo ID ready and gather the financial information requested in the application. Check your rights to other payments before applying and respond to requests for missing evidence. Payment follows approval; it is not guaranteed by submission. If refused, review the reasons and ask your social worker about referring the decision to the municipal family council.

  • Höfn

    Miðgarður — Þjónustumiðstöð Velferðarsviðs

    Víkurbraut 24, 780 Höfn

Phone first to arrange a meeting with a welfare adviser, then apply through Ísland.is.

Prepare the latest confirmed tax return and all income and benefit payments for yourself and your partner for the application month and preceding month. Include foreign pension or other foreign income where relevant. Staff may request bank balances and income credits; more detailed account histories require a reasoned request and your consent. Jobseekers provide Labour Directorate registration and benefit-entitlement information; explain any exhausted entitlement or suspension. Provide medical evidence where illness prevents work. A representative needs written authority.

  • Húsavík

    Félagsþjónusta Norðurþings — Húsavík

    Túngata 1, 640 Húsavík

Call social services to arrange a consultation, which comes with financial counselling.

Prepare last year’s confirmed tax return, current-year tax withholding information, and applicant and partner income or benefit records for the application month and preceding month. Have housing, assets, debts and regular expenses ready. An unemployed applicant provides Labour Directorate registration, benefit information and job-application evidence; the 2026 rules specify at least one application per week. Incapacity requires medical evidence of its cause and expected duration. EEA nationals show domicile registration; non-EEA nationals also show their residence-permit card. Written authority is needed for a representative. Follow the adviser’s requests and keep the decision rather than relying on an estimated payment amount.

  • Hveragerði

    Velferðarsvið Hveragerðis

    Fljótsmörk 2, 810 Hveragerði

Apply through the resident portal before the 20th each month, and a social worker will contact you.

Upload PDFs, not screenshots. Prepare last year’s tax return, current-year withholding records, three months of payslips and relevant partner, benefit, pension and expense records. Unemployed applicants need proof of jobseeker registration even without benefit entitlement; those unable to work need medical evidence, normally no older than four weeks when submitted. EEA citizens provide domicile-registration confirmation; other foreign citizens provide a valid residence permit. Requested evidence must arrive within two weeks to avoid refusal for missing documents.

  • Ísafjörður

    Velferðarsvið Ísafjarðarbæjar

    Hafnarstræti 1, 2. hæð, Stjórnsýsluhúsið, 400 Ísafjörður

Book a consultation online or by phone, and remember that booking does not submit your application.

Prepare income for the application month and preceding month, the latest confirmed tax return, bank balances, assets and debts for yourself and your spouse or cohabiting partner where applicable. Include payslips, benefit and unemployment records, and relevant foreign income. If you or your partner lived abroad this year or last tax year, the rules request a tax return and asset declaration from the country of nationality. Supply residence evidence and, for incapacity, a medical certificate. Missing financial documents stop processing; requested documents not received within two weeks of application can lead to dismissal. A representative needs written authority. Tell the adviser promptly about urgent basic needs rather than waiting silently for documents.

  • Keflavík

Ráðhús Reykjanesbæjar — fjárhagsaðstoð og félagsleg ráðgjöf

Grænásbraut 910, Ásbrú — tímabundið ráðhús, 262 Keflavík

Apply through Ísland.is or at the town hall service centre for help with basic living costs when other income falls short.

Prepare the latest confirmed tax return, household and partner details, income records for the application month and preceding two months, bank balances and incoming-payment records, and applicable housing, benefit, medical or residence evidence. Follow the application’s full checklist. First-time applicants, or applicants returning after six months or more, must normally show photo ID at Town Hall within two working days of applying; contact staff promptly if illness or disability prevents attendance. Keep proof of submission and answer requests for missing evidence.

  • Kópavogur

    Þjónustuver Kópavogsbæjar — velferðarþjónusta

    Digranesvegur 1, 200 Kópavogur

Apply online, or get help at the welfare service desk if you have no electronic ID.

Prepare valid photo ID, income and asset information, housing details and evidence of entitlement to other benefits. The current rules request tax and assessment records, the preceding two months of pay or benefit statements, corresponding partner information where applicable, and a lease if you have one. An unemployed applicant must evidence registration and active jobseeking; incapacity requires appropriate medical evidence. Non-EEA applicants must show their residence-permit card. Follow document requests promptly: the rules normally require the necessary papers within two weeks of signing, with provision for justified emergencies. Keep the decision; a request for Welfare Council review must arrive within four weeks of notification.

  • Mosfellsbær

    Þjónustuver Mosfellsbæjar

    Þverholt 2, 270 Mosfellsbær

Apply through Ísland.is, send the requested documents within two weeks, and repeat the request every month.

Provide your tax return and withholding-tax overview, three months of payslips, and relevant Social Insurance Administration and pension-fund payment records; include your partner’s records where applicable. Unemployed or partly unemployed applicants need Directorate of Labour confirmation. Unemployed applicants without unemployment-benefit entitlement must document at least five job applications per application month. If unable to work, supply a valid medical certificate; the rules specify a three-month validity period. Loan requests while other benefits are pending require proof of those applications and relevant bank evidence. Foreign nationals are asked for residence-permit evidence; a residence arrangement with a responsible party guaranteeing maintenance normally affects entitlement. Ask the welfare team about justified emergency exceptions to documentary requirements. Requested evidence must arrive within 14 days of receipt of the application, or it lapses. A paper application, when needed, must be signed by you and your partner where applicable and presented at the service centre with valid photo ID. A representative needs written authorization.

  • Reyðarfjörður

    Fjölskyldusvið Fjarðabyggðar

    Búðareyri 2, 730 Reyðarfjörður

Apply online for everyday support, or for special help such as essential dental care or a rental-deposit guarantee.

Prepare last year’s tax return and assessment, withholding records, two months of pay or benefit statements, bank balances and relevant partner records. Provide residence documents where applicable. Unemployed applicants need employment-service registration and evidence of normally at least one job application weekly; inability to work requires medical evidence. Submit requested documents within two weeks of applying to avoid dismissal. A signed paper form or formally authorised representative is also allowed under the municipal rules.

  • Reykjavík

    Reykjavík City — East Center

Bíldshöfði 20, South entrance, 110 Reykjavík

Apply online one month at a time, and remember that saving a draft does not send your application.

Bring photo identification for the required identity check. First-time applicants, and people whose last application was six months or more ago, must attend a centre within two business days after submitting. Follow the document requests in your application and show whether other support is available. If unemployed, check unemployment-benefit entitlement and provide evidence of active jobseeking. If unable to work, the city asks for medical evidence of the incapacity period and checks of relevant sickness-benefit rights. Keep the submission confirmation and decision; an exceptional-case refusal may be referred for review under the city’s appeal procedure.

The rules ask for documents before the 20th to avoid payment delays, while processing is expected before the 25th. You may apply during the month, but confirm the current payment timetable with your adviser. Keep the decision: a written Welfare Committee review request is due within four weeks of notification.
