Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Apply for an extension about three months before your permit ends, as processing usually takes at least that long.

Have passport and existing residence documents available and use the checklist for your particular category. Employment evidence must match the employer’s completed declaration. Ask about the required photo, fee and any urgent evidence. For minors, confirm who must attend: the general instructions and those for age 16 are inconsistent, so follow the caseworker’s invitation. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

State whether this is your first permit or an extension, and call if the contact form fails to send.

Prepare passport, visa or current permit as applicable, enrolment or preparatory-course registration, funding and health-insurance evidence. Extensions require academic progress evidence. The current general guidance requires a digital biometric photo from a certified provider or equipped authority, supplied through a Data-Matrix code; paper prints cannot be used. Fees are up to €100; confirm your case amount and bring Girocard with PIN. Credit cards are not accepted.
