Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Apply online or by post before your permit ends, and ask for a visit through the contact form or by phone.

Prepare the application and evidence requested for your residence purpose, including identity/passport and, where relevant, visa, livelihood and health-insurance evidence. Upload the required documents through the application service; its automated document check is only advisory. Keep the distinction between applying, attending an appointment and collecting the finished card: collection appointments follow notification that the eAT has arrived, or no earlier than six weeks after applying if no email address was supplied. For the eAT photo, use secure digital transmission from a certified photo provider or the office terminal (€6). At Eberhardstraße 39, allow about ten minutes before your appointment for the photo. The terminals are unsuitable for children up to about four; arrange an external certified photo for them. Paper photos are not accepted.
