Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Contact the immigration team to arrange an appointment, and check first whether you need a visa from abroad.

Ask your caseworker for the checklist for your intended activity and current status. You may need payslips, a tax-adviser certificate and health-insurance evidence; confirm which apply to your employed or self-employed case and what further documents are needed. Fees vary by case and activity. The office offers electronic photo capture in building B, third floor, for €7; confirm the photo arrangements for your appointment.
