Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Apply online and follow the appointment letter, and bring someone who can interpret if your German is limited.

Prepare your valid passport’s identity page, existing permit and supplementary sheet if held, admission or enrolment evidence, educational qualifications, proof of living costs and health insurance, and language evidence where required. Private insurers must complete the city’s insurance form. Supply authority or custody evidence and other requested documents when applicable; the city may request more during assessment. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.
