Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

    Stadt Leipzig — Ausländerbehörde

Prager Straße 126–128, Technisches Rathaus, Haus B; Eingang Prager Straße 128 (B.I), 04317 Leipzig

Apply online with proof of enrolment, funding and health insurance, or by post if you cannot use the form.

You need copies of your study visa, valid passport and tenancy agreement, current enrolment, the city’s study instruction form, health insurance and proof that you can cover your living costs. A statutory insurer can provide an informal confirmation; private insurance uses the city’s certificate. The starting funding amount is €992 per month, with adjustments for certain insurance, free housing or meals: check the current amount and your circumstances before submitting. Funding evidence can be, for example, a blocked account, scholarship, formal undertaking or employment contract. Fees are €100 for a first permit and €93 for an extension; a documented publicly funded scholarship can exempt you from the fee. Pay at the biometric appointment by an accepted method. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

    Stadt Leipzig — Ausländerbehörde

Prager Straße 126–128, Technisches Rathaus, Haus B; Eingang Prager Straße 128 (B.I), 04317 Leipzig

Send your application online or by post, and expect the biometrics appointment only after the city has reviewed it.

Prepare the documents requested for your permit category and keep the submission evidence. The postal address is Stadt Leipzig, Ausländerbehörde, 04092 Leipzig; allow about seven working days for postal transit. If your permit is approaching expiry while a decision is pending, ask through the contact form about the appropriate interim evidence rather than assuming an appointment extends it. Fees depend on the procedure. Telephone enquiries: +49 341 123 3310, Monday–Thursday 09:00–15:00 and Friday 09:00–12:00.
