Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Apply online and choose the category that matches the document you hold now, such as a visa or a residence permit.

Keep your passport, current immigration document and information about the purpose of stay ready, then follow the form’s individual evidence requests. Confirm the full checklist and original-document requirements rather than using one universal list. For the residence document, Kiel accepts a certified provider’s digital photo code or a €6 PointID photo at the authority; paper photos or scans are not accepted. Attend at Stresemannplatz 5, Building D, first floor, when instructed.

Ask for an appointment by email at least eight weeks before your permit ends, and check how to file your application.

Ask for the study-specific checklist before attending. Have your passport, visa or permit, admission or enrolment, funding and health-insurance evidence available. Bring a certified provider’s digital-photo code; paper photos and scans are not accepted. Alternatively, the authority offers a €6 digital-photo terminal. The procedure normally runs in German; arrange language help if needed.
