Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Use your home postcode on the city’s online portal to find the right application, then wait for your appointment.

Prepare the evidence requested by your selected application and keep the submission confirmation and correspondence. Requirements differ for work, study, family and protection cases, so follow the individual checklist. General customer service: +49 511 168 32330; skilled-worker and student cases: +49 511 168 32337. Reception hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 08:00–12:00 and Thursday 13:00–17:00 for urgent enquiries or simple certificates; these hours do not replace a permit appointment. Ask the team about fees and any evidence of interim status. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

Apply online with all your documents and plan for processing to take up to three months.

Prepare copies of your passport and current visa or permit, enrolment or preparation-course evidence and health insurance. Funding evidence can include a blocked account, scholarship with amount and duration, formal undertaking, or employment contract with the last three payslips. A preparatory German course must have at least 18 teaching hours a week, not counting homework. Documents and information normally need to be in German; follow your individual checklist and check the current funding and digital-photo requirements.
