Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

  • Essen

    Kommunale Ausländerbehörde Essen

    Kruppstraße 16, 45128 Essen

Apply online with BundID if your job falls outside the skilled-worker routes but another rule still allows it.

Prepare passport copy, current residence permit/visa copy, employment evidence such as contract or payslips, rental confirmation and Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis. Additional qualification/experience, language, insurance or financial evidence depends on the legal route. The office can take fingerprints, signature and biometric photo on site; EC-card payment is available at the desk and fees depend on the case. The specific section 19c procedure says a collection appointment is arranged at the visit and permits an authorised collector; follow that arrangement rather than automatically applying another service’s PIN-letter instructions.

    For international students

    Welcome- und ServiceCenter Essen (WSC)

    Dietrich-Oppenberg-Platz 1, 5. & 6. Etage, 45127 Essen

Book your student appointment online and bring proof of enrolment, health insurance and enough money to live on.

Bring the originals requested in your confirmation: valid passport, existing permit and supplementary sheet where applicable, health-insurance confirmation, funding evidence and three months of bank statements. If employed, bring your contract and three payslips. Degree students need enrolment and a transcript; private-university students also need their study contract. Preparatory students need current language-course attendance, certificates earned and conditional admission. Funding examples include a blocked account for one year, a formal undertaking or scholarship. Graduates should bring the original degree certificate or the university’s written completion confirmation. The fee is up to €100 depending on the case; extra documents may be requested.

  • Essen

    Welcome- und ServiceCenter Essen (WSC)

    Dietrich-Oppenberg-Platz 1, 5. & 6. Etage, 45127 Essen

Apply online with BundID for skilled work, an EU Blue Card or a company transfer, once your address in Essen is registered.

Prepare passport copy, current permit copy where applicable, employment evidence such as the contract, the WSC landlord certificate and, where requested, the Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis. The particular route can require qualification, insurance, language and financial evidence; confirm the checklist and current eligibility criteria rather than assuming one Blue Card salary figure applies to everyone. Biometrics, signature and photo can be taken at the WSC. EC-card payment is available at the desk; fees vary by permit. Collection is arranged during the visit, with authorised collection possible. No fixed application-processing period is promised.
