Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Apply through the city’s online service, because applications by email are no longer accepted.

Check the document list for your purpose of stay: work, study, family or another category. Prepare the requested evidence before submitting; there is no single checklist for all permits. Visits are at Erkrather Straße 377–389. Postal correspondence uses Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf, 54/3 Kommunale Ausländerbehörde, 40200 Düsseldorf. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.

    Erkrather Straße 377–389, 40231 Düsseldorf

Choose the permit for training and education in the online service, after registering your main home in Düsseldorf.

For an initial application, use the linked checklist: passport and entry evidence, existing residence documents, admission or enrolment, language evidence, funding and health insurance. Submit copies initially, not originals; foreign-language documents need sworn translations. Check the education-provider certificate and any additional evidence for your circumstances. Renewal also requires proof of living costs. If an eAT is to be issued, a securely transmitted digital biometric photo is required; paper prints or ordinary scanned uploads do not replace it. Confirm the office’s approved photo process before your appointment.
