Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Ask for an appointment through the request form, in German if you can, because there are no walk-in hours.

Read the linked document checklist for your exact purpose and follow the invitation’s required-document list. Bring the invitation QR code and scan it at the entrance to register your arrival. The screen directs you to the relevant floor. Use the ground-floor photo station only if the invitation requires a biometric photo. Check access needs before visiting: the city names the north entrance; confirm current accessibility with the office.

Email the immigration office right after you arrive and register, even if your study visa is still valid.

Prepare passport identity page, application form, existing German or other EU residence documents if held, digital biometric photo, current health-insurance membership certificate, rental agreement showing rent and owner consent for a sublet, enrolment or preparatory-course evidence, language certificate and funding evidence for at least 12 months. Accepted funding evidence may include a blocked account, scholarship or employment contract with three payslips; briefly borrowed funds are insufficient. Add university evidence for a course change or exceeding the standard study period. Further documents may be requested.
