Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

    For international students

Amt für Migration — Ausbildung und Studium (38/2-2)

    Olpe 1, Stadthaus, Gebäudeteil C — Zugang Berswordthalle, Kleppingstraße 37, 44137 Dortmund

If no renewal letter arrives, contact the study team at least two weeks before your permit expires.

Prepare passport and current permit with supplement, originals and copies, current biometric photo, funding evidence, current health-insurance evidence, enrolment and the Prüfbescheinigung completed by your university examination office. Funding examples are a study undertaking with current bank statement or blocked account. Preparatory cases need the relevant course/Studienkolleg/examination evidence. Confirm current digital-photo arrangements and extra documents. Renewal fee €93; the city requests EC-card payment.

  • Dortmund

Amt für Migration — Einreise & Beschäftigung (38/2-1)

Olpe 1, Stadthaus, Gebäudeteil C — Zugang Berswordthalle, Kleppingstraße 47, Dortmund

After arriving on a long-stay visa, arrange an appointment first, because there are no walk-in hours.

Prepare the completed registration form, landlord confirmation and residence-permit application, plus a valid national passport in original and copy and a current biometric photo; confirm the current digital-photo arrangements. Family reunification with a third-country national additionally needs the sponsor’s last three payslips in original/copy and employer certificate. Study/language-course cases need funding evidence, current health-insurance evidence and enrolment/course confirmation; funding examples are a study undertaking with a current bank statement or blocked account. Work cases list employment contract in original/copy, employer certificate and Federal Employment Agency approval copy where applicable. Confirm your individual checklist and fee; no single fee applies to every permit.

  • Dortmund

Stadt Dortmund — Amt für Migration, Freizügigkeitsangelegenheiten (38/2-3)

    Olpe 1, Gebäudeteil F, 2. Etage, 44135 Dortmund

Use the free-movement contact form to ask for the checklist and an appointment, not the newcomer registration booking.

Prepare a valid passport and proof of the family relationship and of the EU/EEA citizen’s circumstances. You need a biometric photo, but there is no single document list for every family, so ask which originals, translations, legalisation and digital-photo arrangements apply to you. Check entry-visa requirements before you travel; the confirmation of your contact form is not a residence card and does not allow you to travel. Fees depend on the rules that apply to your case.
