Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Pick the online service that matches your reason for staying, because each purpose has its own application.

Prepare passport or accepted travel document and the evidence specified in the chosen application. A biometric photograph and further purpose-specific documents are required; confirm the current digital-photo arrangements before attending. The local procedure says examination can take weeks and gives a non-guaranteed eAT estimate of up to six weeks or longer. Confirm the applicable permit fee, payment method and any expiry-sensitive action directly. The authority’s postal postcode is 09106 Chemnitz.

In the city’s online menu, choose the permit for training and education, which includes study.

Use the city form’s final-page checklist for your category. For a new arrival it includes passport identity/visa/entry-stamp copies, housing, course agreement or enrolment, registration confirmation and current funding evidence. For renewal, prepare next-semester enrolment if available, otherwise the current semester; from the third subject semester, a current transcript with examination-attempt counts. Also prepare DSH or assessment-exam evidence once and accepted funding evidence, including relevant employment documents with three payslips. Confirm the current funding threshold and digital-photo process; do not rely on old university fee or funding figures.
