Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Wait for the city’s letter asking for your documents, and email if none has arrived one month before expiry.

Supply the evidence requested for your permit and report relevant changes, including family circumstances or new official decisions. Keep your case reference available and follow the appointment’s identity-document instructions. Only approved digital passport photos are accepted: use a compliant photo provider or the authority’s capture system; displaying a photo on your phone is insufficient. Do not assume a submitted enquiry or a later appointment alone proves permission to travel or work; ask the authority about your individual status.

Send your application by email or post, ideally eight weeks before your visa or permit expires.

Prepare your passport, admission or enrolment, funding evidence such as a blocked account or formal undertaking, and health-insurance evidence. For continuing study, provide progress and completion-prospect evidence when requested; for preparation, provide course or Studienkolleg acceptance. A current digital biometric photo is required. Follow the authority’s photo instructions and individual checklist; the procedure normally runs in German.
