Offices that handle residence permits in German cities

Check how your city starts an application

Residence permits are decided by the foreigners’ office for the place where you live, and in some regions that is a district or regional authority rather than the city itself. That authority sets the first step and the list of papers you are asked for.

Register your address, apply online within three months of arriving, then wait for the personal invitation.

Follow the application’s individual document checklist and bring requested originals. BundID (German federal online account) is optional: after entering the postcode, choose Weitere Optionen. Keep the receipt; avoid duplicate email applications. Federal rules allow the office to request a valid recognised passport or substitute, proof of the family relationship and the EU citizen’s registration confirmation. Dependent relatives and other qualifying close persons can need additional evidence. Follow the personalised checklist rather than assuming marriage evidence alone is sufficient.

Apply online at least four weeks before your permit expires, and do not send a duplicate by email.

Follow the exact evidence checklist shown in the online application for your circumstances; the office may request more documents after review. Bring originals requested with your appointment. Paper photos are not accepted: use a compatible digital-photo provider and bring its QR code, or the paid capture terminal in waiting area 1 or 2. Allow about fifteen minutes for capture plus possible queues, following the appointment instructions. If you need step-free access, contact +49 531 470-6072 shortly before the appointment. Fees depend on the case and are communicated after application; no general processing time is promised.
